About the Job

Wärtsilä is a world leader in marine technology and leading the industry's transformation towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. With the world’s widest portfolio and service network, we – Wärtsilians - deliver efficient, safe and sustainable integrated products and solutions to enhance the business of our customers. The opportunities presented through digitalisation and new technologies are offering a new era of shipping. Did you know that shipping is the world’s most efficient mode of transportation and that approximately 80% of world trade is carried by sea?

We want to change the course towards an interconnected and cleaner maritime future and are constantly on the lookout for future-oriented talent to join our team and to work towards enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services - together. Are you ready to jump onboard?

We are seeking a highly trained strategic professional

Strategic Purchaser

with a demonstrated history in procurement to join our team.

The preferred location for the position is in Drunen, The Netherlands but also other Wärtsilä offices globally are possible locations.

What you will be doing

As a Strategic Purchaser within the Project Services department at Wärtsilä, you will play a critical role in managing and developing our supplier base for business-critical services related to propulsion equipment such as Energy Saving Devices (ESD), Steerable Thrusters, Controllable Pitch Propellers, and Propulsion Control Systems.

This position offers a very diverse role, encompassing both strategic and operational responsibilities—from placing purchase orders (P.O.s) to creating a full purchasing strategy for Project Services.

In this role, you will be part of a successful and collaborative team of project managers, project engineers, project procurement coordinators, transport coordinators, and document control specialists. You will work closely with these professionals to ensure that all procurement activities align with project timelines and requirements.

Additionally, you will interact with various stakeholders, including mechanical engineers and hydrodynamic engineers, to ensure that technical specifications and quality standards are met. By integrating these diverse functions, you will help drive the efficiency and effectiveness of Wärtsilä's global supply chain.

As Strategic Purchaser your work will focus on these key responsibilities:

  • Provide pricing support and develop sales tools for various service product types.
  • Negotiate, create, and follow up on purchase orders (P.O.s) for development projects and significant projects.
  • Source suppliers for ad-hoc requirements in projects.
  • Offer direct support for project development and delivery (Project Dry Dock support).
  • Manage strategic purchasing responsibilities for project services suppliers.
  • Identify and establish new suppliers for workshops, ESDs, and other service products.
  • Monitor the global material market to anticipate and react to changes.
  • Develop and update frame agreements annually.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive purchasing strategy for the team.
  • Ensure the quality of products and services from suppliers through rigorous standards and evaluations.
  • Facilitate communication and integration within Wärtsilä's global supply chain.
  • Participate in category meetings and act as a liaison between strategic purchasers and common suppliers.

On a Day-to-Day Basis: Every day, you are proactively seeking input from team members involved in project delivery regarding liability issues, procurement issues, and quality issues. You will continually assess the performance of our existing suppliers, identifying potential roadmaps for future suppliers while considering the development of new products.

To be successful in this role we expect you to have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in strategic purchasing, preferably within the marine or propulsion equipment industry.
  • Strong negotiation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in market analysis and developing purchasing strategies.
  • Familiarity with global supply chain processes and standards.

Why you and us?

We at Wärtsilä believe in empowerment, ownership and taking responsibility of our work. We support each other’s growth and co-creation is the true basis of our innovation. We have courage to see opportunities and take initiative.

We are authentic and honest, and we strongly believe in that by being your own true self you can accomplish so much more. We don’t always get it right the first time, and if mistakes are made, we make sure to learn and grow from them. We want everyone to voice their opinions freely. That is why we have built an environment that empowers you and everyone around you, and where you can feel safe and cared for. Are you eager to be part of this ambition?

We have an amazing team and we are excited about our work and the impact it has on building sustainable societies. We are looking to find a colleague with this shared passion for smart technologies and a sustainable future.

Contact & next steps

We hope to hear from you soon, by submitting your application through our careers portal. We aim to keep you updated on the process throughout.
