The Stone Soup Leadership Institute is seeking an experienced Tech Developer to build our new Stone Soup Climate Education Platform. The Tech Developer works closely with our Platform Product Manager.

Location & Time Commitment

  • Start date: August 23, 2024, with onboarding.
  • In-Person Planning Session: Aug. 28.
  • Interviews conducted: July 23-26, Aug. 2-9 & Aug. 19-20.
  • Project Phase I: August-November with opportunity for Phase II.
  • Time: 10-15 hours/week.
  • Weekly meetings: in-person & zoom.
  • Location: San Francisco/Bay Area. Only candidates living in the US will be considered.
  • Compensation: Based on experience: $40-60 with bonus.

Project Timeline: Teacher Training/Professional Development Program: October 19

The Institute is proud to be developing its teacher training modules with Salem State University.  We will conduct a one-day training program on October 19 in conjunction with MASS STEM Week. These teachers will be the first to test the new Stone Soup Climate Education Platform.  They will be invited to serve as a beta-users group for ongoing feedback. Teachers will receive CEU’s for this PD. video

The Institute’s Stone Soup Climate Education Curriculum is designed for teachers to bring into their classrooms to inspire their students to become leaders in their lives, their communities and in our world.  We feature 100 heroes in the book, Stone Soup fora Sustainable World: Life-Changing Stories of Young Heroes. This builds on our first book of 100 stories and the Diversity,Equity & Inclusion, Social Emotional Learning, & Service Learning Curriculum. video

Stone Soup Climate Education Platform

Background: The Institute has been a leader in developing climate education tools, trainings, and initiatives to build asustainable world for over 25 years (Case Studies). To scale the Institute’s work globally, the social media posts are transferred to Stone Soup Climate Education Platform.

 

The Platform includes these components

  • Courses based on stories from the book; aligned with the Institute’s Performance Metrics, developed in partnership with youth and educators using the books and curriculum.
  • Teacher Training (PD) Modules
  • Performance Metrics
  • Sustainability Survey
  • Printable Documents: we make it easy to print our stories, lesson plans, and social media calendars.
  • YouTube Education Channel: features over 500 videos - of our heroes, The Institute’s events, programs.
  • Social Media: Hero of the Week: Each week we feature one of the 200 people in our books. We bring the stories to life for students by featuring their story, lesson plan, video, organizational recognition, and press. We target educators/decision makersand spotlight lessons learned from The Institute's educational initiatives.
  • Platform Team includes the Platform Product Manager, AI Consultant, Webmaster, Teacher Trainer, author and Founding Director, Platform Social Media Coordinator and Platform Video Coordinator.

 

Tech Developer Responsibilities

  • Work with the Institute’s team to translate design mockups into fully functional WordPress pages
  • Develop custom WordPress themes and plugins from scratch independently.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to team members as needed.
  • Create/manage signed-in user experiences, ensure secure authentication & session management
  • Customize website's search functionality to enhance user experience and accessibility of content
  • Implement personalization features, content search, and AI integration.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software bugs, site performance issues, and tech issues to ensure optimal functionality and user experience.
  • Optimize platform/website performance.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation for custom themes, plugins, user guides for the platform team, and any significant changes to the website.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years experience in WordPress development, including frontend & backend expertise
  • Strong understanding of WordPress core functionalities, APIs, and database structures.
  • Knowledge of UX/UI principles to enhance user experience.
  • Experience with WordPress theme and plugin development.
  • Proven proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery, and PHP.
  • Strong understanding of web standards and SEO principles.
  • Familiarity with responsive design techniques and frameworks (e.g., Bootstrap).
  • Experience with customization and integration of additional software systems.
  • Experience with Google Analytics integrations and other analytics tools.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical team members.

  • Experience with edtech and nonprofit is a plus.
