ABOUT THE COALITION

The Building Decarbonization Coalition (BDC) aligns critical stakeholders on a path to transform the nation’s buildings through clean energy, using policy, research, market development, and public engagement. The BDC and its members are charting the course to eliminate fossil fuels in buildings to improve people’s health, cut climate and air pollution, prioritize high-road jobs, and ensure that our communities are more resilient to the impacts of climate change. 

The need to electrify the United States (U.S.) building stock and phase out fossil fuels has gone from a niche technical concern to the most debated climate issue in the U.S. The BDC is proud to have been a leader in this conversation by organizing, speaking for, and empowering a broad group of stakeholders who are united behind the common goal of eliminating fossil fuels from buildings. 

With the BDC’s The Switch Is On campaign, we provide the education, inspiration, and tools to an all-electric lifestyles and to switch out their fossil fuel appliances and solutions for efficient, electric alternatives. The campaign uses a variety of community based social marketing approaches to reach customers, contractors, neighborhoods, and communities, including but not limited to, The Switch Is On Ambassador program, events, workshops, presentations, home/block parties, earned media, door-to-door canvassing, partnerships with CBOs and more, grassroots/community marketing, social media, and translated educational materials. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION & KEY PRIORITIES

The Community Outreach Associate will serve as a contributing member of BDC’s Customer Experience and Marketing (CXM) team and will report to the Community Outreach Associate Manager.  The core focus on this outreach is educating communities on the environmental, social equity, economic, and public health benefits of building electrification. They will be responsible for implementing the team’s community outreach initiatives, such as running and expanding the volunteer Ambassador program, organizing outreach events and activities, fostering relationships and partnerships with Community Based Organizations (CBO), and supporting campaign social media efforts. Will be the primary contact for all outreach activities in their region for any community events, Ambassador outreach initiatives, and will act as the liaison for all Ambassador communications. 

The Community Outreach Associate will be responsible for the following:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: 

  • Develop and implement outreach plans. 
  • Collaborate on field research, strategies, and processes to engage the community.
  • Recruit volunteers and champion The Switch Is On Ambassador enrollment, onboarding, and training.
  • Engage and foster partnerships with CBOs, local government, businesses, and educational institutions to promote The Switch Is On resources, the Ambassador program for recruitment and expansion, contractor enrollment in The Switch Is On Contractor Directory, and workforce career pathway as a contractor . 
  • Develop, organize, and attend outreach events and activities; 80% of this position’s work week will be in the field recruiting partners,  attending off-site partnership meetings, and leading outreach events and activities. 
  • This position will also work with coordinating interviews, video tours, blogs, and earned media opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the CXM, State, Events, Partnerships, and Communication teams on aligning and amplifying community outreach with BDC’s north star, 3-year goals, and state implementation plans. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT: 

  • Manage volunteer support requests and the execution of outreach plans. 
  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously and efficiently manage a project calendar in Asana, ensuring that all tasks are assigned and completed on time. 

COMMUNICATION: Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills. This role will involve monthly public presentations, webinars, and organizing events/workshops including: 

  • Collaborate with the CXM, Communications, and Product teams to develop outreach materials as needed, such as fliers, palm cards, giveaway items, and more. 
  • Ensure content from outreach events and activities are captured and delivered for social media, newsletters, blogs, and email blasts.  

EXPERTISE: Stay informed about community needs, volunteer opportunities, policy changes, and industry trends.

METRICS: Track metrics. Use metrics to optimize outreach efforts, improve volunteer experiences, and track how the Ambassador program and community outreach tactics contribute to heat pump and home electrification switching, equity, and campaign goals.

PRESENTATION REPORTS: Track and document community outreach and ambassador impact. Create visually engaging slide decks that highlight accomplishments, successes, stories, for external partners and internal leadership/teams, on a quarterly basis.

QUALIFICATIONS & CHARACTERISTICS

  • A background in grassroots or community organizing or volunteer program development 
  • Experience organizing and scaling volunteer programs
  • 2+ years of experience with volunteer coordination, ideally within the clean energy and/or climate solution landscape
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills
  • Strong organizational and collaborative working skills
  • Outstanding project management abilities to ensure that projects advance on time and on budget
  • Tech savvy and familiarity with CRM (eg. Hubspot), Asana, Canva, Zoom, Slack, Google Office
  • A self-starter who can manage both tactical and strategic tasks
  • Proven record of creating and maintaining external relationships with CBOs and educational institutions. 
  • A passion for the issues of sustainability, decarbonization, clean energy, climate solutions and the electrification of built environments

WORK ENVIRONMENT, SCHEDULE, & TRAVEL

Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with weekend availability. Personal car required, mileage reimbursement provided. Must be based in the Los Angeles County area.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$85,000 commensurate with experience, plus a competitive benefits package including paid health insurance coverage, retirement benefits with company matching, unlimited flexible paid leave, 11 paid holidays, access to professional development resources, and much more.
