The Senior Digital Advocacy Specialist will join Earthjustice’s Digital Engagement team in the Communications department. The position is responsible for devising and executing Earthjustice’s digital advocacy and engagement strategies. This individual will focus on advocacy, cultivating, and stewarding Earthjustice’s potential and existing supporters donors using digital tools and platforms such as email, web, and SMS. Major responsibilities include creating digital advocacy campaigns in collaboration with Communications strategists and various program staff; promoting digital advocacy campaigns via email and SMS channels; working with the digital team to promote digital advocacy campaigns on social media and paid advertising; development of digital advocacy strategies to support the goals of the Communications department and other departments; tracking, analysis, and reporting on digital advocacy metrics; experimenting with new digital advocacy tools and tactics.
The person should be comfortable with HTML, digital advocacy tools, spreadsheets, analytics, and fundraising.
The individual will report to the Senior Digital Advocacy Manager and will work in close coordination with the entire digital team.
Ideally, the position would be located in San Francisco with the Specialist going into the office under a hybrid schedule (2x weekly). However, we are open to considering remote candidates within the US.
Development of Digital Advocacy campaign strategies (40%)
- Create digital advocacy campaigns to support the goals of the Communications department, PAL, and other departments.
- Work with communication strategists, digital team, PAL staff, program staff, team members across the organization, hired contractors, and external coalitions to develop digital advocacy promotion strategies on Earthjustice digital channels, in particular email, web, SMS, social media, and paid advertising.
- Works with Digital Advocacy Associate in the production of of advocacy-related web content, outbound HTML email and SMS communications regarding our programmatic work to existing and potential Earthjustice audiences.
- Participate in relevant team, program, and coalition meetings to generate ideas and make decisions on effective digital advocacy campaigns.
- Serve as technical lead in optimizing the performance of email and SMS advocacy tool templates.
SMS program management (20%)
- Manages SMS program; Works with Sr. Digital Advocacy Manager to develop and implement SMS program strategy as a critical, rapidly growing function of our overall digital advocacy strategy.
- Develop SMS list growth strategies through paid and unpaid efforts such as partnering with social media team on social campaigns, marketing team on marketing campaigns, cross promotions with other organizations, sponsored petitions, advertising campaigns, and partnership with influencer marketing program.
- Develop tactics and strategies to improve SMS supporter engagement like deliverability tracking, A|B testing, welcome series implementation, keeping an active messaging calendar, managing multiple audience segments, and vendor relations.
Email/SMS List and Audience Growth (15%)
- Develop email list growth strategies through paid and unpaid efforts such as partnering with social media team on social campaigns, marketing team on marketing campaigns, cross promotions with other organizations, sponsored petitions and advertising campaigns.
- Oversees SMS program; Works with Sr. Digital Advocacy Manager to develop SMS program strategy.
- Develop and implement digital advocacy and engagement strategies to broaden our target audience and deepen existing supporter engagement.
Data Monitoring & Analysis (10%)
- Works in tandem with Sr. Digital Advocacy Manager to oversee regular reporting on analytics, leverage data to adjust strategy, and monitor overall digital health of program
- Generate metrics and populate the digital advocacy dashboard to inform goals and strategic direction.
- Partner with digital advocacy platform vendor to ensure systems are functioning appropriately and we are taking advantage of new and innovative tools our platform has to offer.
- Partner with external contractors on data gathering and reporting.
External and Internal Stewardship (15%)
- Email and SMS calendar coordination; communicating with team members across the organization of email and SMS promotion capacity.
- Follow up with supporters to get them further engaged in digital advocacy campaigns such as writing LTE, partner/coalition building, taking additional actions, etc.
- Work with Digital Advocacy Associate to write follow-up messages to external Earthjustice supporters on case updates and advocacy campaign updates
- Work with Digital Advocacy Associate to follow up with internal staff members on digital advocacy campaigns, sharing metrics, and continued internal education about digital advocacy program.
- Draft best practices guidelines and train existing and new staff on digital advocacy.
- Develop strategies to improve understanding of Digital Advocacy program with internal staff, such as training new and existing staff on campaign strategies.
- Attend external skill-building and networking events to develop partnerships across like-minded organizations.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree, preferred. 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Experience working in or with a non-profit preferred.
- Experience with at least one eCRM tool—preferably EveryAction.
- Experience with SMS mobile messaging tools.
- Experience with project management tools – preferably Monday.com.
- CRM, HTML and Photoshop experience preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Excel, HTML and digital tools.
- Strong project management skills.
- Ability to learn quickly and take on responsibility.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects with a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work across teams and independently.
- Passionate about environmental issues.
- Strong detail orientation and organizational skills a must.
- Excellent written and in-person communications skills.
- Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
