Climate Central is an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists researching and reporting the facts about our changing climate and its impact on the public. We are seeking the services of a talented and motivated web developer to support us in developing a growing portfolio of data visualization, mapping, and web development projects in general.
This position is a fully remote independent contract. The position is paid on an hourly basis. 30-40 hours per week will be expected for the duration of the contract&mdash;notwithstanding planned time off or vacation&mdash;with availability required during US Eastern time standard business hours. At the end of the contract, renewal is possible, depending on Climate Central needs and mutual interests.
Essential qualifications for this role:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">5+ years professional experience developing software</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Thorough knowledge of essential web technologies: HTML5, CSS3, modern JavaScript</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">4+ years experience with React</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">4+ years experience using static site generators</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Experience with Next.js</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Experience with JAMStack architectures</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">At least some familiarity with web mapping toolkits such as Leaflet, Google Maps, and Mapbox</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Ability to work effectively with designers, web development contractors, and other project participants</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Commitment to tasks assigned and high-quality communication</li>

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Have experience with automated deployment services such as Netlify or Vercel</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Have significant experience with web mapping technologies and geospatial data</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">Have significant experience with web data visualization, using libraries such as D3.js, Plotly, etc. or lower-level interfaces such as SVG, canvas, etc.</li>
