Senior Frontend Engineer

The time is now to join a high-impact effort addressing climate change. Climate Central is an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists researching and reporting the facts about our changing climate and its impact on the public. We are seeking the services of a talented and motivated web developer to support us in developing a growing portfolio of data visualization, mapping, and web development projects in general.

This position is a fully remote independent contract. The position is paid on an hourly basis. 30-40 hours per week will be expected for the duration of the contract—notwithstanding planned time off or vacation—with availability required during US Eastern time standard business hours. At the end of the contract, renewal is possible, depending on Climate Central needs and mutual interests.

Essential qualifications for this role:

• 5+ years professional experience developing software
• Thorough knowledge of essential web technologies: HTML5, CSS3, modern JavaScript
• 4+ years experience with React
• 4+ years experience using static site generators
• Experience with Next.js
• Experience with JAMStack architectures
• At least some familiarity with web mapping toolkits such as Leaflet, Google Maps, and Mapbox
• Ability to work effectively with designers, web development contractors, and other project participants
• Commitment to tasks assigned and high-quality communication

Preference will be given to candidates who:

• Have experience supervising the work of other coders; management experience is not required, but your work may include repository maintainership
• Have experience with headless CMS products such as Contentful
• Have experience implementing web search functionality
• Have experience with automated deployment services such as Netlify or Vercel
• Have significant experience with web mapping technologies and geospatial data
• Have significant experience with web data visualization, using libraries such as D3.js, Plotly, etc. or lower-level interfaces such as SVG, canvas, etc.

Location

• This position is fully remote. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J., operating under standard US Eastern time business hours. Substantial overlap with these operating hours is strongly preferable, but we can be flexible. Candidates must be authorized to perform services for a US company.

Compensation

• Hourly rate we can accept will depend on qualifications. As this is an independent contract, compensation is cash only.
