Position overview

Lydian is seeking a creative Senior Materials Engineer with expertise in ceramic materials and their manufacturing. You will play a critical role in scaling our proprietary electrified reactor technology to the commercial scale. You will leverage your experience in ceramic material design and manufacturing processes to develop first-of-a-kind material and process specifications. You will interface with both internal and external teams in order to inform design, and deliver products that meet demanding technical requirements. 

The ideal candidate is energized by solving challenging technical problems in ceramic materials development and manufacturing scale-up. You embrace ambiguous problems and can own projects from start to finish. You have a degree in Materials Science and Engineering (or similar) and 5+ years of industry experience working with ceramics materials. You should also have a passion for sustainable energy and desire to work in a fast-paced startup environment. This is a full-time permanent position based in Cambridge, MA.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the R&D team to develop high temperature ceramic materials with specific material properties, chemical compatibility and geometries
  • Develop proprietary materials and processes that are critical to the function of Lydian’s electrified reactors
  • Design and develop specifications for manufacturing processes and equipment through conversations with key internal and external stakeholders, ensuring that production of parts that repeatably meet stringent requirements
  • Assess material performance through characterization and post-mortem analyses to inform R&D and manufacturing strategies
  • Apply modeling and statistical process tools to predict component lifetime
  • Build out Lydian’s internal materials and subcomponent manufacturing capabilities to increase scale and throughput of reactor component production
  • Collaborate with engineering design team to inform design of electrified reactor systems
  • Stay up to date (and educate other team members) on next generation ceramic manufacturing strategies and industry trends and development

Qualifications

  • B.S. or M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering
  • 5+ years of industry experience with ceramics materials
  • Experience with design and scale-up of new materials and formulations
  • Familiarity with high temperature material manufacturing processes and required environmental controls
  • Experience with characterization tools to analyze material properties (SEM/EDS, XRD, microstructure analysis, etc.)
  • Ability to understand analytical results and feed learnings into process improvements
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and solve interesting technical problems
