Senior Mechanical Design Engineer – Integration

Your role and your team:

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer in the Structural Integration Team, you will be responsible for various testing-related activities. This includes generating test article designs from the concept phase through to manufacturing, designing interfaces between the test article and the test system, and providing input to the structural test team from conceptualization to detailed design. Additionally, you will coordinate design-related instrumentation activities. Your work will cover the entire testing spectrum, from coupon tests to full-scale tests, to validate the design of Lilium’s airframe. You will collaborate closely with sub-tier suppliers who are developing test solutions of various scales. Whether designing metallic or composite parts or developing mechanical systems, your contributions will be pivotal in realizing our cutting-edge aircraft.

You will report directly to the Engineering Lead responsible for the Structural Integrity Testing within the Structures and Interior Design Organization. The Structures and Interior Design Organization is the engineering team within the Lilium engineering organization responsible for developing the Aircraft structure, such as the Fuselage or the Wing system and the Interior of the Lilium Jet. The team is supporting the development across the entire life cycle - from concept through to detailed design, testing and into serial production.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing Siemens NX, develop the design of test articles and their interfaces with test systems to meet stringent testing requirements.
  • Perform design activities related to test articles within the validation and verification test plan, including tests from coupon to full-scale.
  • Provide input to the structural test team from the conceptualization to the detailed design of test setups.
  • Collaborate closely with sub-tier suppliers developing test solutions of various scales.
  • Oversee system development from concept to production, addressing design, manufacturing, and assembly issues as they arise.
  • Manage design data in Teamcenter, including PBS and BOM.
  • Assist in developing manufacturing, integration, and test processes and procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with procurement departments to manage the acquisition of components and standard parts for test setups, ensuring timely initiation and follow-up of purchases.
  • Define and manage requirements.
  • Coordinate and manage suppliers.
  • Create certification-related documentation.
  • Create, review and approve technical 2D drawings for manufacturing release.
  • Continuously learn new skills and share knowledge with team members.
  • Participate in ad-hoc projects or tasks as needed.

Profile Requirements:

  • University degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical/Vehicle Engineering, with a preference for aerospace specialization.
  • 8+ years of professional experience in the aerospace industry (or similar)
  • Proven experience in component-level or higher-level testing, with additional expertise in whiffletree structures and fatigue component-level testing being advantageous.
  • Proven experience taking multiple complex assemblies from concept through manufacturing with little outside guidance. Hands on manufacturing experience and knowledge is highly desired.
  • Strong understanding of engineering first principles and ability to perform first pass hand calculations.
  • Experience in supplier management.
  • In-depth knowledge of composite and metallic structures and their design principles.
  • Proficiency in a CAD system, preferably Siemens NX.
  • Strong knowledge of ISO GPS (or ASME GD&T) and excellent drafting skills.
  • Basic knowledge of PDM/PLM systems, such as Teamcenter or equivalent.
  • High level of self-reliance with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
