The successful candidate will also lead the Legal Department's efforts in privacy and data protection, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. While the day-to-day role is largely corporate generalist in nature, candidates having privacy certifications and/or prior experience as a data protection officer are encouraged to apply.  As a member of a small legal team for a publicly traded professional services firm focused on supporting our clients with their most difficult science and engineering questions, this position offers a diverse and engaging workload, providing ample opportunities for professional growth and development.

You will be responsible for

  • Privacy and Data Protection: Lead and manage the legal aspects of the company’s privacy and data protection initiatives, working closely with Information Security to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations for both corporate activities and client project work.
  • Corporate Governance and Securities: Assist with corporate governance matters, including board and committee support, and ensure compliance with securities laws and regulations.
  • Compliance: Assist in developing, implementing, and overseeing compliance programs and policies to ensure adherence to legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Employment Law: Provide legal advice and support on employment-related matters, including employee relations, policies, and procedures.
  • Litigation: Support litigation and dispute resolution processes, working closely with General Counsel and external counsel as needed.
  • Risk Management: Identify and mitigate legal risks across the organization, providing strategic advice to senior leadership.
  • General Legal Support: Provide legal support on a variety of other matters as needed, including contract review and negotiation, intellectual property, brand protection/marketing, and mergers and acquisitions.
  • Training and Awareness: Coordinate (and, as needed, conduct) legal training and workshops for employees to foster compliance with various legal regulations, including privacy laws and compliance protocols. Support Legal Department efforts around messaging for compliance and risk awareness.
  • Legal Developments & Continuous Learning: Keep abreast of legal developments affecting our business, particularly in areas of privacy, corporate law, and compliance. Provide related updates and guidance to the department and practice groups, as needed.  Collaborate with others in the department to innovate processes and/or implement ways of working to address compliance areas.

You will have the following skills and qualifications

  • Education: J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Licenses: Admitted in California, or at least one State Bar Admission and in good standing with the ability to waive into California.
  • Workplace: The desire to work full-time out of our Menlo Park, CA office. Our team collaborates in-person and the selected candidate is required to work out of our office (Monday – Friday).
  • Background: Strong risk mitigation-focused experience is required. Willingness to continually adapt and evolve to learn new areas of legal knowledge in order to meet business needs and work with a highly educated and legally savvy business base. Demonstrated experience reviewing regulations and advising clients on privacy law, plus some experience in at least 2 of the other areas and a willingness to learn. 8+ years of experience practicing law as a US-licensed attorney.
  • Applications: Skilled user of Microsoft Office and Adobe products, including Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel. Experience with compliance tools such as Navex. Experience using or implementing AI-based and/or next-generation legal tech tools is a plus.
  • General:
    • Strong work ethic, positive and collaborative attitude, ability to “roll up sleeves to get things done” and develop strong working relationships with the full Exponent team.
    • Strong organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.
    • Sound judgment and ability to balance legal risks with business objectives in a fast-paced environment.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated success collaborating effectively in a complex, global environment.
    • Strong analytical and research skills. Exceptional attention to detail.
    • Flexible as needed to meet response timelines commensurate with client service levels customary for a top-tier professional services firm.
    • Team player who proactively pitches in where needed. Must be comfortable working in a client-centric environment.
