Job Description

As Health and Safety Coordinator under the direct reporting to the Project Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Coordinator will play a key role in ensuring safe execution of the Ontario Line construction and will be responsible for providing support to the safety leader of the project, management team and superintendents. This position will provide leadership and coordination of the day-to-day health and safety requirements of the Ontario Line Project.

  • Support and promote the Ontario Line - Occupational Health and Safety System.

  • Assist site operations with compliance to current Occupational Health and Safety Legislation and safety rules.

  • Participate in site-level work planning to ensure health and safety risks are identified and controlled in the planning stages.

  • Liaise with Site Superintendents on a regular basis relating to health and safety related matters.

  • Educate and guide Site Superintendents on safety best practices, OHS legislation, and site-specific safety-related matters/requirements.

  • Train, Coach and guide site superintendents, employees, and sub-contractors to ensure unsafe conditions/acts are corrected, and safe work practices are followed.

  • Assist with the completion of all required health and safety documentation in a timely fashion.

  • Assist with collection, review and maintenance of subcontractor pre-qualification health and safety documentation including worker training, equipment maintenance and SDS.

  • Be up to date on all site activities, operations, and personnel from a risk management perspective.

  • Facilitate and participate in site inspections and implement corrective action as required.

  • Work with crews to develop safe work practices and safe job procedures. Ensure all safe work practices and safe job procedures are complete, cover necessary risks and controls and are available for crews to review.

  • Play a key role in worker injuries/illnesses management including first contact (first aid), communication and coordination with the workers supervisor and the responsible return to work coordinator / case manager.

  • Ensure that adequate first aid coverage is always available for site activities.

  • Ensure meticulously accurate, detailed, and organized first aid records and patient care forms for injured workers are maintained.

  • Immediately reports site incidents to the necessary parties as per the project incident reporting protocols.

  • Liase with client, WSIB, city and other stakeholder representatives.

  • Participate in site incident investigations.

  • Analyze and identify leading and lagging trends to assist in incident/injury prevention.

  • Act as a point of contact for safety-related inquiries and concerns.

WORK CONDITIONS

  • May be required to travel.

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

  • Excellent communication and leadership skills with the ability to engage and influence individuals at all organizational levels.

  • Demonstrated capacity to work both autonomously and within a team environment.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with different stakeholders, including internal staff, contractors and regulatory bodies.

  • Demonstrated leadership, project management and problem-solving skills.

  • University degree in engineering (master’s degree preferred).

  • NCSO designation and/or CRSP (working towards)

  • Min 5 years Construction/Mayor Infrastructure/ LRTs (desirable)

  • knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Acts and Regulations.

  • Exceptional incident investigation skills with demonstrated management of Risk assessment tools like Hazmat, Risk Matrix, FMEA etc.

  • Knowledge and application of and ISO 45001 and 14001 systems. (Certified Internal Auditor preferred)
