About the Job

About Electrified Thermal Solutions

Boilers, furnaces, and kilns are the engines of our industrial economy, providing heat to melt steel, form cement, and transform chemicals. But historically reaching this high-temperature heat required burning fossil fuels, making the industrial sector responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Electrified Thermal Solutions has a simple and massive goal: to electrify industry.

To do this, we are building the Joule Hive™ thermal battery: an energy storage technology that converts and stores cheap, renewable electricity as high-temperature heat. Our vision is to mitigate gigatons of CO2 emissions per year by deploying the Joule Hive™ at every industrial furnace, turbine, boiler, and kiln.

We are grateful for the support from the US DOE ARPA-E, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, Activate, National Science Foundation, Clean Energy Ventures, Starlight Ventures, and the Grantham Foundation.

About the Role

As a Lead Commissioning Engineer, you will lead the detailed planning and commissioning of the Joule Hive™ thermal battery (JHTB) Commercial Demonstration plant and subsequent products. This is largely a remote position with extensive (~ 60%) travel expectations, with travel either to the demonstration and future customer sites or, on occasion, to ETS headquarters in Medford, MA. On location, you will work with contractors, vendors, and site hosts to ensure the JHTBs are installed and commissioned as planned. You will report directly to the VP of Engineering.

What You’ll Do

Lead development of commissioning philosophy, schedule, and procedures throughout the design process.

Work with site hosts to evaluate system integration including mating interfaces, footprint, facility compatibility (power, enclosure, HVAC, etc.) and high-level economics of deployment.

Translate and implement design and assembly process from ETS lab facilities into the field.

Work with site host to implement any safety policies and procedures throughout the installation and commissioning phases to ensure a smooth and safe project.

Lead commissioning and start-up of all systems within the JHTB in a logical and controlled manner.

Develop and execute commissioning procedures and coordinate a team of technicians, operations personnel, other contractors, and vendor support personnel during installation and commissioning phases.

Lead design of test plans to validate process control systems, instrumentation, and equipment.

system handover and acceptance from the installation team, including system discipline walk-downs and punch list generation.

What You'll Bring

Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or industrial engineering is preferred but not required.

At least five years of experience commissioning energy and/or industrial systems.

At least 2 years of experience developing and executing commissioning procedures for industrial systems be willing to travel ~60% of year.

Ability to work in an outdoor plant/construction environment, including exposure to noise and varying temperatures and to be available for on-call support during plant startups and critical testing phases

Organization & detail-orientation

A collaborative, highly adaptable spirit, and a love of challenging assumptions.

What We Offer

Competitive compensation package, including equity options

Medical, Dental & Vision Insurance 401(k) with 4% matching

12 weeks of fully paid parental leave, with an additional two weeks for birthing parents

20 days of flexible vacation days annually

A minimum of 13 days of paid company holidays

Access to commuter benefits

Access to a Health Savings Account, Flexible Savings Account, and Dependent Care Flexible Savings Account

What We Value

As a growing startup, we value executing through uncertainty and moving toward the problem.
Our innovation is the electrically-conductive firebrick, the heart of the Joule Hive thermal battery (JHTB). This innovation enables two characteristics with profound implications for decarbonizing industry globally. The first is that the electrically conductive firebrick is the first heating element that can convert electricity to temperatures up to 1,800°C that can scale to electrify the highest temperature, hardest to abate sectors including steel, cement, glass, chemicals. The second is that these high temperatures correlate to unprecedented energy density which enables the cost-effective storage of that thermal energy with >95% efficiency and therefore cheap off-peak electricity can be used to bring the cost of decarbonizing below or close to parity with existing fossil fuel sources.

The Joule Hive thermal battery is a stack of electrically conductive firebricks in an insulated steel container and an electrical balance of plant. The JHTB charges by running electricity directly through the bricks to joule-heat them up to 1800°C, the thermal energy is stored at that temperature, and then the system is discharged by running air or another gas through the brick channels to provide heat to any furnace, boiler, turbine, or kiln.
