NRDC is seeking a Office of General Counsel Administrator to work with the Office of the General Counsel team in our New York, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Chicago, or Santa Monica offices. 

 

Position Summary 

The Office of General Counsel Administrator manages critical operations and organizational compliance for General Counsel and NRDC. This role acts as a liaison for General Counsel to all other areas of the organization, and engages in research and compliance projects.

Responsibilities

General:

  • Develop the General Counsel budget on an annual basis and monitor and manage spending throughout the year.
  • Oversee the functioning of the contract review process, including monitoring the process for effectiveness and efficiency, resolving process-related issues, and making any necessary changes to the process. In Partnership with Office of General Counsel attorneys, track and implement litigation/document holds, respond to third party records requests, respond to internal records request for former employee files, and associated tasks.
  • Manage agendas and calendar invitations for Office of General Counsel meetings and take and store/share meeting notes.
  • Organize and maintain the Office of General Counsel SharePoint internal-facing and NRDC-facing SharePoint sites used for storage of organizational documents, board materials, notes and policies, and other important materials.
  • Respond to inquiries from internal clients at NRDC and the Action Fund sent to the Office of General Counsel general Outlook email address and equivalents in Teams, etc.
  • Perform legal research and other activities under the direction of a General Counsel attorney.
  • Perform special projects as assigned.

Compliance:

  • Arrange state charitable solicitation, business, and sales and use tax exemption registrations for both NRDC and the Action Fund.
  • Oversee the annual conflict of interest disclosure process, as well as periodic disclosure/approval issues. 
  • Partner with the Finance and Accounting team in preparing materials for NRDC’s annual audit, including retrieving pro bono/in-kind letters from law firms, updating NRDC’s litigation schedule, and drafting an annual legal confirmation letter for the auditor.
  • Collaborate with Office of General Counsel attorneys with other general compliance other than charitable solicitation and business registrations (e.g. commercial co-ventures, charitable gift annuity registrations, etc.), including working with outside counsel.
  • Manage federal lobbying filings, as well as state and local lobbying filings for California and New York. Partner with Office of General Counsel attorneys on other lobby compliance matters (including technical management of the Replicon platform, communicating with Replicon account holders, reviewing and correcting Replicon entries, liaising with outside counsel, other periodic filings, financial reconciliations and data gathering).
  • Collaborate with Office of General Counsel attorneys on the oversight and management of various institutional policies.
  • Intake, research and resolve routine compliance matters for NRDC’s international offices.

Qualifications

 

Minimum Education & Experience:  Required

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience

Preferred

  • Non-profit or other relevant work experience

  • Excellent research and written/oral communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and analytical ability, sound judgment, strategic orientation, and interpersonal maturity.
  • Outstanding problem-solving skills, including the ability to proactively identify obstacles and propose solutions or recommendations to overcome them. 
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines with strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based productivity, file storage and communication tools, including project management systems
  • Familiarity with generative and non-generative artificial intelligence tools
  • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse colleagues, leaders and partners.
  • Flexibility and ability to work well independently on multiple projects with a wide variety of people, at all levels of the organization.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $90,000 to $98,000.  

 

Our offices are open and we are operating in a hybrid model. We offer NRDCers flexibility, and we ask them to come into the office and spend meaningful time there in collaboration with their colleagues. We call this purposeful presence.
