Carba has created the most efficient, scalable, and cost-effective way to turn back the clock and mitigate the worst effects of climate change by permanently removing billions of tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We have developed a technology that makes slow pyrolysis fast, turning waste biomass into stable charcoal (solid carbon) which can be buried for permanent carbon sequestration, used in materials to replace fossil use, or used as a soil amendment.
We are looking for a Head of Operations to lead our operational efforts. The key elements of the role will be establishing and optimizing Carba’s field operations, ensuring regulatory and registry compliance, and running the operations team. The candidate must be passionate, hardworking, fast-paced, innovative and thrive wearing multiple hats, being hands on, and working in a small team. The role will report to Carba’s CEO and will partner with the CEO on building and scaling the business.
Objectives and Responsibilities:
● Field Operations: Oversee day-to-day field operations of Carba’s pyrolysis units. Ensure smooth, safe, and efficient biomass sourcing, running of equipment, and material shipments. Manage field staff and establish SOPs and compliance documentation.
● Regulatory and Registry Compliance: Ensure Carba’s operations are in full compliance with all requirements of local regulations and carbon credit registries. Establish processes for data collection, recordkeeping, reporting and verification.
● Cost Structure: Analyze and optimize Carba’s bottom-line cost structure across all operational areas. Identify and implement opportunities for cost savings and efficiency improvement.
● Team Building: Build out the operations team with skilled talent. Provide training, mentorship and professional development. Foster a culture of safety, efficiency and continuous improvement.
Required skills and qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree or higher
● 8-15 years of work experience
● 5+ years of experience in operations leadership roles
● Experienced doer and leader in operations and project management
● Experienced leader in building, managing, and leading teams
● Excellent demonstrated written and oral communications skills
● Self-motivated, thrives in small team environment and likes challenges
● Organized and accountable
● Highly collaborative
● Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
Preferred skills and qualifications:
● Start-up experience
● Biomass systems, pyrolysis processing, industrial manufacturing and/or materials handling
● Global business experience
This role will be on-site in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota and require up to 20% of time traveling when necessary.
