About the Job

Octopus Energy Group is a global leader in renewable energy and innovation. We are transforming the energy market by delivering affordable, green energy to millions of customers. At the heart of our success is a commitment to revolutionising how electricity networks operate and driving policies that unlock a clean, low-cost, and resilient energy future.

About the role
Energy networks are rapidly becoming the crucial bottleneck to achieving net zero. Constraints on the grid risk limiting our ability to build renewables, move clean power where it's needed, and meet our customer demand for low carbon tech like EVs, heat pumps and solar power.

As part of the Octopus global mission to drive decarbonisation in a way that benefits customers, we’re increasingly engaging on how energy networks are governed and managed. Influencing the policy and regulatory framework is absolutely crucial to making change happen in this sector.

We are seeking a professional with expertise in the energy sector and a motivation to learn more about the grid. The grid policy specialist will drive forward policy and regulatory solutions to the unique challenges facing the grid, as well as collaborating with network companies to make change happen. This could cover topics across market reform, network regulation, grid tech innovation, financing, supply chain, network competition and grid connections.

What you'll do...

  • Engage with decision makers in government, Ofgem, NESO and network companies to help make Octopus voice heard
  • Build consensus on Octopus policy positions and core messages for external stakeholders
  • Develop and execute influence and engagement strategies on grid, working with our policy, strategy, communications and corporate affairs teams
  • Respond to policy and regulatory consultations
  • Engage and build relationships with network companies to find better ways of getting things done
  • Collaborate with internal Octopus business units, including generation and energy services, to improve ways of working with the network companies
  • Act as internal expert and advisor on grid policy and regulation across the Octopus group

What you'll need...

  • Knowledge of energy policy - you don’t need to be an expert in network regulation today but should have an interest to learn
  • Background/education in economics, political science, engineering, technology or another relevant field
  • Able to write concisely about complex topics and build arguments that are supported by good quality data and analysis Ideally experience working or interacting with regulated networks or infrastructure
  • Comfortable being a self starter and working in a culture with flat hierarchy, low process/admin overheads and a high degree of autonomy
  • Commitment to the Octopus mission
