About the Position

Guided by an inspiring vision, strategic plan, and significant early financial investment, we seek an entrepreneurial Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis to join our team. Industrious Labs is fully remote, and this role reports to Partner and Director of Analytics, Victoria Chu.

The Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis manages technical research and analysis for cross-sectoral and socio-technological efforts at Industrious Labs. They are charged with shaping and executing analytics strategies to advance our mission and deliver the transformation of industry. From strategy development to execution, the Director bottom lines cross-cutting analysis to drive broader support for industrial policy in our chemicals and clean heat strategies, and will deliver on building a more data focused national network to collaborate and share emerging approaches towards industrial transformation. The Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis also holds key responsibilities within the Analytics Department, supporting the Director of Analytics in managing staff and in designing and leading the development and management of intra-department systems and projects.

The Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis will focus on the following key areas of responsibility:

Strategic Analysis & Partnerships

1. Serving as the in-house expert on socio-technological trends and research towards industrial transformation
2. Creating and executing comprehensive and actionable analytics plans to engage in cross-sectoral and broader industrial policy, research, and analysis that drives forward strategies, innovation, and impact.
3. Leveraging expertise through direct engagement of both federal and state level industrial decarbonization efforts and through publications, posts, and speaking engagements
4. Building a diverse national network of technical experts, practitioners, and big thinkers to leverage innovative ideas and strategies to drive solutions towards industrial transformation

Organizational and Team Development

1. Playing a leadership role in the Analytics Department:
1. Managing, coaching, mentoring other Analytics Department staff;
2. Engaging in fundraising efforts, managing budgets, and supervising contractors and vendors;
3. Building and managing systems and projects that cut across and serve the entire department.
4. Other leadership responsibilities as needed or required.

The Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis joins a deeply committed team with a track record of success in campaign strategy, data analysis, and communications, focusing on climate and clean energy. The successful candidate is entrepreneurial and excited about the prospect of building something new in the climate movement from the ground up. They have the experience of being part of setting vision, establishing, and scaling successful programs with an ethos of creativity, humility, and an expectation of continual learning.

We seek a Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis who shares the belief that we can all do things we’ve never done before and can stretch ourselves to achieve incredible results.

This role requires a deep commitment to environmental and climate justice principles, proven collaboration skills, and the ability to design and execute coordinated strategies that will generate change in a deeply entrenched and seemingly intractable aspect of the climate movement. The Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis demonstrates initiative by diving right in to take a concept from idea to implementation, navigating through internal and external barriers as they arise without getting stuck, and finding and deploying resources creatively to solve problems. The selected candidate will also possess most of the following Core and Preferred qualifications:

Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis Core Qualifications

• 10-15 years of increasing responsibility in developing and delivering technical analysis in an academic, campaign, advocacy, or political context.
• Exceptional quantitative and qualitative analytical and modeling proficiency with expert level proficiency in: 
• Power and Industrial Systems Data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Energy Information Administration (EIA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including electricity demand data, power plant characteristics, transmission line data, renewable energy modeling and credits, and emissions/fuel pricing
• Open-source software contributions, utilizing Git version control
• Statistical software such as R, Python statistical packages, SAS, or Stata and visualization software such as GIS, Tableau, Plotly, or other
• Programming for data collection and calculation automation
• MS Office Applications, especially Microsoft Excel or Access
• Proven track record of delivering strategic, actionable analysis in an advocacy or campaign setting. Enthusiasm for leveraging analysis to sharpen strategies and build credibility in new partnerships
• Outstanding people and project management abilities to ensure strong collaboration and campaigns and projects that advance on time and on budget.
• Experience providing high-level support and expertise in the direction of campaign efforts to partners and executives
• Ability to get up to speed on complex information and communicate key trends and findings effectively
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills that demonstrate an ability to translate complex data and analysis into persuasive narratives 

Director of Industrial Systems & Analysis Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience and content knowledge in climate, clean energy, public policy and/or the industrial sector, including manufacturing and labor.
• Entrepreneurial drive to build an organization from the ground up; prior start-up experience as an early team member in a growing organization.
• Established history of scientific publishing, authoring peer-reviewed articles in disciplines related to industrial analysis

• Proven ability to prioritize and be flexible in a fast-paced, constantly evolving, and collaborative environment, where working on a team and working individually are all required.
• Commitment to giving and receiving direct, compassionate feedback.

 Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $148,000. Industrious Labs has a policy not to negotiate on salaries. Historically, negotiations reward those who have the skill, privilege, and confidence to ask for more money; and because not everyone has those skills, allowing for negotiations undermines the economic equity we strive for as an organization. Rather than use negotiations to drive competitive salaries, we endeavor to pay people well and establish a transparent salary scale based on the experience, competencies, and responsibilities required to thrive in this role.
