Permanent is dedicated to building thriving local food systems.

We’re building a wholesale marketplace that supports short-chain, regenerative, and sustainable agriculture. Our farm network and market technology make it simple for large buyers to source directly from hundreds of local growers, with accurate seasonal inventory, efficient first-mile distribution, and traceability from farm to plate – all while making better, regenerative farming practices more profitable and scalable for family farms.

We have the fastest-growing produce catalog in the US, and we’re excited about building food systems that are resilient, transparent, and rich in flavor, health, and culture. Together, we can transition $1 trillion — 20% of world food spend — to local, sustainable sources.

Your Role

As the Senior Software Engineer, you will take a leadership role in building Permanent’s marketplace platform. You will work hand-in-hand with Permanent’s leadership team, collaborating on product strategy and design while architecting and building the core platform and tools to support the purchase and movement of fresh food from farm to plate.

Your Responsibilities

  • Develop software solutions that connect buyers with real-time farm inventory and support our dynamic supply chain.

  • Take a hands-on role in the full product development lifecycle, working with Permanent leadership from customer research through real-world impact.

  • Make key software architecture decisions, balancing stage-appropriate choices with investments in long-term scalability. Lead creative exploration of new technologies.

  • Invest in creating intuitive user experiences for farmers, buyers, and internal users. Think holistically about our user experience, of which software is just one part.

  • Develop processes and practices that will scale with our growing team.

About You

  • 5+ years of experience designing, developing, and shipping impactful products in real-world environments.

  • Expertise in at least one full-stack framework, with a curiosity and openness to exploring others.

  • Excited about applying LLMs to practical challenges (some of our favorites: farm inventory analysis, fast-paced logistics, and marketplace communications).

  • Advocate for and implement best practices and standards in system design, development, and maintenance.

  • Bring out the best in those around you, always working as one team across disciplines.

  • Have an entrepreneurial sense of initiative and a bias for action; your colleagues count on you to roll up your sleeves and get things done.

  • Committed to making an impact in regenerative agriculture, sustainability, and climate.
