About Commonwealth Fusion Systems:

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is on a mission to deliver the urgent transition to fusion energy.

Combining decades of research, top talent and new technologies, we’re designing and building commercially viable fusion power plants. And working with policymakers and suppliers to build the energy industry of the future.

We’re in the best position to make it happen. Since 2018, we’ve raised over $2 billion in capital – more than any other fusion energy company in the U.S.

Now we’re looking for more thinkers, doers, builders, and makers to join us. People who’ll bring new perspectives, solve tough problems, and thrive as part of a team.

If that’s you and this role fits, we want to hear from you.

Join the power movement as a RF Systems Manager

SPARC sustains fusion reactions by feeding over 25MW of 120MHz RF power into the tokamak to heat a hydrogen plasma to 100 million Kelvin. We need an outstanding RF leader to build the most powerful RF plant in the world.

In this role you will manage a team of RF, electrical, and mechanical engineers and technicians. You will be responsible for the design, build, and delivery of RF transmitters, drive systems, transmission lines, instrumentation, control systems, manufacturing stands, and test equipment.

We are building a novel RF system that we will first demonstrate on our first tokamak (SPARC), and then scale to fusion power plants (ARC). Most components are designed, assembled, and tested in-house. A strong hands-on background in RF system architecture, modeling/simulation, design, integration, test, and operation is required for this role. Experience with volume manufacturing, mechanical packaging, electronics design, and high-power RF applications is strongly desired.

For more information on the SPARC RF system, see the SPARC journal papers here:

What you'll do:

  • Lead the team responsible for the design, prototyping, manufacturing, integration, commissioning, and delivery of RF systems
  • Train engineers in RF design practices, testing, troubleshooting, modeling, and simulation techniques
  • Manage contracts with component vendors

What we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years hands-on experience in RF system design, integration, and test
  • 4+ years leading RF teams of comparable scope
  • Embedded electronics design, build, and troubleshooting
  • Mechanical design and packaging of electromechanical assemblies
  • Experience in volume manufacturing under a configuration-control and quality process
  • High power RF applications (megawatt scale) – design, development, and safety
  • Altium or similar electrical design
  • NX or similar mechanical design
  • RF/microwave simulation software: CST, HFSS, AWR Microwave Office

Must-have Requirements:

  • Perform activities such as stooping, climbing, typing, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
  • Dedication to safety to mitigate industrial hazards that may include heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, and cryogenics
