Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking a Senior Substation Engineer to join our team! The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for technical design support for the substation engineering group for BRP. The Senior Substation Engineer will act as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) for engineering design by creating or improving engineering standards, code compliance, and design processes. This will include all aspects of substation physical engineering, electrical system studies, and equipment specifications creation or review. Additional duties to support procurement efforts, along with other responsibilities related to substation design, may be required. 

The Senior Substation Engineer will also perform the role of Owner's Engineer for designs produced by the 3rd Party Engineer of Record (EOR) for BRP. This will include developing the scope of work for 3rd Party requests for proposals and reviews of schedules, engineering labor estimates, substation design, and one-line diagram development, along with other responsibilities related to managing 3rd Party EORs. 

The Senior Substation Engineer reports directly to the Manager, Substation Engineering.  

This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable travel distance of one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC. Any travel expenses will be fully reimbursed.

What You'll Do:

  • Coordinate station design work tasks, including project scope development, cost estimating, proposal development, design preparation, and review of design packages for construction.
  • Participate in efforts to develop and implement standards for equipment, material, design, and construction requirements for transmission substations.
  • Assist the company design processes, procedures, and the use of computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software applications to ensure consistency, quality, and efficiency in the station design process.
  • Assist in the development of station material specifications, selection, evaluation of materials, and failure analysis to determine root causes.
  • Provide input to budget development related to substation design and material procurement for BRP estimators.
  • Work closely with other engineering groups within BRP to coordinate all aspects of solar and battery storage engineering.
  • Act as Owner's Engineer for design work performed by outside consultants.
  • Participate in industry forums, conferences, and other company initiatives to support BRP in its mission.
  • Act as an SME for the BRP Substation Team in the evaluation of Substation Physical Designs
  • Review electrical system studies including Short Circuits, Load Flow, Reactive Power, Harmonics, Arc Flash, Grounding, Lightning, and Lighting.
  • Provide technical support as needed in project-related meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Must-Haves:

  • 6-10+ years of substation design experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substation components and related communications and protection functions.
  • Some understanding of Protection and Controls for substations.
  • Experience using ETAP, EasyPower, SKM, WinIGS, CDEGS, or equivalent software.
  • Ability to design and review substation packages for field installation.
  • Ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable commercial agility; ability to reorder critical design projects based on new commercial requirements, under tight deadlines and sometimes changing requirements.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills. 

Education and Certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering required.
  • Professional Engineering License or the ability to retain one is highly preferred.

Working Environment and Physical Demand:

  • This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable traveling distance to one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC.
  • Travel up to 10-25% to substations at solar sites and office visits.
  • This position works in an office environment.
  • May require lifting/carrying items up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer for extended periods.
