Position Specific Description

The Director of NERC Compliance is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards and requirements within the NextEra Energy Power Generation organization. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and security of the bulk electric system (BES) by implementing, monitoring, and improving compliance programs and practices.


Key Responsibilities:


Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for NERC compliance to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements and standards
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and support to the NERC compliance team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture
  • Execute strategic planning for changes in NERC standards and guidelines, and ensure the organization is prepared to comply with new and evolving requirements

Compliance Program Management:

  • Design, implement, and maintain an effective NERC compliance program that includes policies, procedures, training, and internal controls
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of compliance status, issues, and metrics to senior management and regulatory bodies

Regulatory Interface:

  • Coordinate and lead internal and external audits, investigations, and responses to compliance-related inquiries and findings.
  • Represent the organization in industry forums, committees, and working groups related to NERC compliance.

Training and Awareness:

  • Develop and deliver training programs to educate employees, contractors, and stakeholders on NERC compliance requirements and best practices
  • Promote a culture of integrity and compliance across a matrix organization through excellent communication and program controls

Event Response and Mitigation:

  • Lead the development and implementation of event response and mitigation plans
  • Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective actions to prevent recurrence of compliance issues

Reporting and Documentation:

  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of the NERC compliance program, including policies, procedures, and compliance evidence
  • Ensure accurate and timely submission of compliance reports to regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in the energy industry, with at least 7 years in a leadership role 
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Project Management Certification
  • Six Sigma Quality Certification
  • In-depth knowledge of NERC standards and requirements, as well as ISO/RTO regulations and tariffs 
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful compliance programs and managing regulatory relationships
  • Experience in power generation design, operation, and maintenance practices

 

Working Conditions:

  • The position requires occasional travel to attend meetings, industry conferences, and site visits
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities and deadlines

Job Overview
