About the Job

We’re Blue River, a team of innovators driven to create intelligent machinery that solves monumental problems for our customers. We empower our customers – farmers, construction crews, and foresters - to implement safer and more sustainable solutions, driving increased profitability with less reliance on scarce labor. We believe that focusing on the small stuff – pixel-by-pixel and task-by-task - leads to big gains.

Blue River Technology aligns with John Deere’s vision to “innovate on behalf of humanity” by quickly identifying and solving high-value, high-uncertainty challenges in AI, machine learning, computer vision, and robotics. BRT acts as a research and development flywheel, building not only new products but also new platforms that reliably create value for both Deere and its customers. From fully autonomous machines to highly precise farming equipment, BRT and Deere are partnering to create technical breakthroughs in industries like agriculture and construction.

Summary

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team in the role of CVML Engineer. You will be joining a world-class research and engineering team to provide critical skills in improving existing systems and pushing the boundaries of this technology. You will be involved in the entire CVML development lifecycle, including data collection and preprocessing, algorithm design, model training and evaluation, and integration into our existing systems. You will have the opportunity to release CVML models for thousands of farmers across the world and play a crucial role in shaping the future of precision agriculture.

Job Responsibilities

A combination, not necessarily all-inclusive, of the following:

  • Design and build ML products that satisfy requirements from a broad set of stakeholders.

  • Put CVML and Foundation Models to work for data cleaning, enrichment, and selection to build high-quality datasets for training CVML models.

  • Train and fine-tune CVML models using both existing and custom datasets.

  • Model performance evaluation through rigorous testing and validation.

  • CVML algorithm and model design for real-time performance and resource-constrained environments.

  • Research in the CVML field and exploration of potential applications for our company.

Required Experience and Skills

  • 2 or more years of experience in related CVML field.

  • Understanding of the foundations of machine learning and computer vision, including image processing, feature extraction, object detection, and classification.

  • Proficiency in Python and some knowledge in C++; foundations of software engineering.

  • Familiarity with deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.

  • Familiarity with CVML libraries and tools, such as OpenCV, scikit-learn.

  • Understanding of the foundations of data science and statistics, including authoring and communication of data analyses.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with a keen attention to detail.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and effectively communicate complex technical concepts.

  • Passion for emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, and computer vision.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Prior experience or coursework in CVML projects or research.

  • Familiarity with cloud-based technologies.

  • Experience with edge computing platforms, embedded systems, or GPU programming.

  • Understanding of optimization techniques for CVML algorithms and models.

  • Contributions to open-source CVML projects or participation in Kaggle competitions.

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

In 2011, two Stanford graduate students, Jorge (the former head of precision agriculture at Trimble) and Lee (a PhD student and roboticist), met while taking Steve Blank's Lean LaunchPad course. They converged on a wild ambition: to make farming more sustainable through robotics and computer vision. Together, they built and tested their idea in California's Central Valley - proving the applicability of machine learning, computer vision, and robotics to the field of agriculture. With an idea, support from friends & family, and a grant from the NSF, Blue River Technology was born. The first smart machine—the lettuce bot—focused on lettuce thinning, a traditionally time-intensive and expensive task of eliminating unwanted lettuce seedlings, The lettuce bot automated this arduous process by taking images, identifying which plants to remove, spraying them, and verifying the accuracy and performance of the system, all in real time. See & Spray is the next generation of Blue River's technology. See & Spray machines leverage deep learning to enable our machines to identify a greater variety of plants—both crops & weeds—with better accuracy, and then make crop management decisions on the spot. Custom nozzle designs enable <1-inch spray resolution, and powerful software powers faster and more agile crop protection. See & Spray is currently operating in weeding for cotton and soybeans.
