Job Title: Director of Development (Major Gifts, Giving and Philanthropy)
Location: Washington, D.C. (or Remote with Travel)
Reports To: Chief Strategy Officer

The Development Director will develop, launch, and lead Winrock’s Non-Federal fundraising and business development strategy, fostering a culture of philanthropy and strategic partnerships. Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the DD will be responsible for driving diversified revenue growth through private philanthropy, individual giving, corporate partnerships, foundations, High Net Worth Individual cultivation, and other non-governmental sources.

Due to the quickly changing federal funding landscape, Winrock is looking to further build out its Non-Federal segment, which currently houses several program portfolios funded by foundations, private sector clients, and multi-lateral institutions. The DD will lead fundraising strategy and coordination of donor relations, working across Winrock and all our program units, with a focus on the non-federal segment.

 

Key Responsibilities

Fundraising & Resource Mobilization

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to expand Winrock’s financial resources.
  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward relationships with major donors, corporate partners, and foundations to drive increased philanthropic giving.
  • Expand Winrock’s donor base through strategic engagement and targeted campaigns.
  • Oversee grant writing, proposal development, and donor communications to secure multi-year funding commitments.
  • Implement and manage donor software and customer relationship management systems to ensure coordinated outreach with donor organizations 

Business Development & Strategic Partnerships

  • Lead the organization’s approach to individual giving, legacy gifts, and donor collaboratives, identifying new business opportunities aligned with Winrock’s mission.
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure alignment of funding opportunities with organizational priorities and impact goals.
  • Develop innovative partnerships with corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, impact investors, and high-net-worth individuals.
  • Work closely with the new business steam to ensure our systems and processes align with prospective donors.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Build and lead a high-performing development team, providing strategic direction and professional development.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure fundraising and business development success.
  • Work closely with the Executive Team, Board of Directors, and senior leadership team to ensure alignment with organizational goals.
  • Represent Winrock externally in donor meetings, conferences, and other fundraising engagements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Minimum of 10-15 years of experience in fundraising, business development, or a related field, with a proven track record of securing multi-million-dollar gifts and grants.
  • Experience working in the nonprofit, international development, or social enterprise sectors.
  • Strong understanding of philanthropic trends, corporate partnerships, and donor engagement strategies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated success in leading high-performing teams and managing complex donor portfolios.
  • Experience with CRM and fundraising software and new business processes.
  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, business administration, international development, or a related field preferred.

Salary: This position has a salary range between $155,000 and $175,000 with an additional 10% 403b annual employer contribution and excellent benefits package.
