The Opportunity:
The Database Developer is a key member of the Product Development team, responsible for supporting the database technologies embedded in our broad product line and contributing to the ongoing evolution of the platform. This role will play a critical part in transitioning our current database infrastructure to a cloud-native architecture, and building out a new business layer to generate insights and reporting from time-series based data. The role also includes maintaining the current business and data access layer, implemented in SQL and Stored Procedures.
The Database Developer will work closely with development teams to support data modeling while maintaining high performance, scalability, and operational efficiency within systems deployed both on-premises and in cloud environments.
Location of Position:
This is a hybrid position based in our Burnaby, BC office.
Specifically, the Database Developer will:
Take ownership of data modeling to support product development teams in the development of new features and products.
Design and build out an architecture to achieve horizontal scalability of our data layer.
Contribute to the development of a cloud-native platform, including the integration of multiple different backend technologies into a common platform.
Review, maintain, and enhance the current database systems which provide the foundations of multiple product lines.
Optimize database performance and ensure system reliability across platforms.
Ensure the ongoing scalability and performance of the underlying database systems.
What you Bring:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in database development, with strong knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL.
Solid experience in database design, maintenance, and performance optimization in both on-premises and cloud environments.
Experience with cloud-native tools and technologies, including experience with data warehousing and analytics.
Strong Linux background.
Deep understanding of data modeling, database architecture, and system resource/performance considerations.
Experience with cloud environments and database migration strategies.
Expertise in SQL, stored procedures, and analytic functions, preferably with Oracle and PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB.
Experience with database connection and data access libraries and tools in a Linux environment using Oracle/PostgreSQL in Python, Java, C/C++, and Go.
Proven track record of supporting mission-critical database systems in production environments.
Familiarity with database operations, monitoring, and security best practices.
Desirable Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related discipline.
Experience with data lakes, and cloud-based databases such as MongoDB or Snowflake.
Experience with large-scale database migration projects.
Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL TimescaleDB, and other open-source database management systems.
Experience working in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing technologies.
