Senior Backend Engineer

About You

You are a backend engineer who knows the best way to design something, but also enjoys taking the scrappier approach when it makes sense. At the end of the day, you are excited that you have solved a problem to provide a better experience for a customer, and to put a product out in the world that makes a real difference toward sustainability.

You take pride in your work and set a high standard for the quality of your code, as well as the documentation describing it. You also set this high bar for your colleagues, and always seek to support them in reaching it, while valuing the feedback and support that they give you in return. You like to engage and collaborate with colleagues across the team from Engineering to Customer Support to Product and to Business in order to understand the whole business perspective and know how your work fits into the bigger picture. What You’ll Be Doing

• Design, implement, and test backend services within the Synop platform, across charging, energy, vehicle telematics, and billing.

• Continuously improve the structure and function of the codebases you are working on, always seeking to leave things better than you found them

• Collaborate with other engineers across the team to support one another in solving problems and implementing new design patterns to benefit the platform as a whole

• Code review for other engineers on the team, providing thoughtful and attentive feedback to improve code quality for everyone

• Engage with Product and other teams to plan, scope, and discuss projects, providing your expertise around implementation options and tradeoffs to arrive at the best solution

• Support customer success to identify, mitigate, resolve and prevent bugs for users, always seeking to both improve resiliency document process to help reduce issues in the future

• Leverage AI and other automation tools to increase velocity, improve quality, and deepen our attention to detail in our work

What You’ll Bring to the Role

• Strong programming skills in Java and Spring (experience with Typescript or Python is plus)

• Deep hands-on experience with AWS (CDK is a plus)

• Experience with scalable backend architecture

• Experience being hands on in a startup growth phase

• Experience with time series databases (e.g. Timescale) and event driven architectures (e.g, SQS, Kinesis, etc.)

• Past experience working with Stripe, OCPP, OCPI, EV, or energy domains is a plus.

• Strong bias towards automated testing by identifying high value and meaningful test cases

• Good understanding of and attention to security best practices

• Intentional usage of AI tools, knowing how and where to use them to accelerate your work effectively without jeopardizing quality

• Strong verbal & written communication, and willingness to share ideas, receive feedback, challenge others’ assumptions and be challenged yourself in service of the best possible outcomes.
