Job Description:

This position leads a cross-functional engineering team to produce innovative product solutions, advance technology enablers, and execute product development projects for the Surveillance / Systems Integration business within Teledyne FLIR Defense. The Sr. Manager is responsible for delivering technical and cost and schedule performance for all engineering content for the section.  They provide strategic technical leadership by directing all aspects of the section engineering policies, objectives, and initiatives based on long-term product and profitability goals.  They are responsible for supplying and maintaining adequate resources for all engineering functions in the pursuit of the business’s strategic goals and operational plans. The Sr. Manager is also responsible for the overall organizational health of the engineering workforce and for the recruitment, retention, and development of top talent. The position requires flexibility to manage multiple customer requirements (cost, schedule, technical capabilities) while using analytical and strategic skills to guide the engineering team to successful program deliveries of customer needs. A key part of this role is to work collaboratively across organizational boundaries and ensure programs are smoothly transitioned to production and deployment phases. The individual must be able to interact with business unit peers, division technical leaders and diverse customers. The successful candidate is an experienced technical and business professional who can focus simultaneously on near- and long-term objectives.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Build, lead and manage the cross-functional engineering organization dedicated to the ongoing advancement of the Engineering team and product roadmaps.

  • Accountable for technical, cost and schedule performance for technical projects.

  • Manage engineering staffing demand, allocation of resources and posting of requisitions.

  • Work with Engineering Leadership Team to conduct ongoing skills assessment and proactively address potential skills gaps. Lead and mentor the engineering leadership team to continue to develop strong technical leaders.

  • Plan and execute product development, from product definition through production transition, across markets to meet business goals and objectives.

  • Manage Internal Research and Development (IRAD) project portfolio and contribute to product technology roadmaps.

  • Manage Engineering organization budgets.

  • Champion the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.

  • Decision maker for high level / high impact engineering technical issues.

  • Develop and support a culture of continuous improvement and best practices within the Engineering organization.

  • Foster a high level of employee motivation, performance, and commitment.

  • Manage staffing plans and review work plans and schedules for each phase of a project in accordance with time limitations and funding.

  • Represent engineering organization with major customers and stakeholders.

  • Responsible for developing engineering estimates for business proposals, and other proposal support efforts as needed. 

Job Qualifications:

  • BS degree and 10 years of experience or MS/PhD degree and 8 years of experience in electro-mechanical and related systems.

  • 5+ years of experience in a technical leadership role.

  • 3+ years of resource and project management experience.

  • Knowledge of mechanical component and system design, analysis, and integration. Familiarization with the tools required for design, analysis, evaluation, and integration.

  • Knowledge of product lifecycle, including design, manufacturing, deployment, modification, sustainment, and disposal. Knowledge and experience in product design release and change management.

  • Experience leading Engineering teams including but not limited to providing technical guidance, setting goals, and establishing tasks.

  • Experience providing gap analysis for knowledge/skill deficiencies on the team.

  • Experienced providing training to Engineering staff.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Able and willing to travel approximately 5-10% domestic.

Salary Range:

$135,500.00-$180,600.000

The anticipated salary range listed for this role is only an estimate. Actual compensation for successful candidates is carefully determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, location, education/training, work experience, key skills, and type of position.
