About the Job
We are a renewable energy and ocean technology company committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans. Our focus is on capturing civilizational levels of ultra-low-cost renewable energy for applications including computing and affordable renewable fuels delivered to shore.
The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, Oregon and backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices. We operate as an idea meritocracy in which the best ideas change the company’s direction on a regular basis.
Project DescriptionWe are seeking a motivated and hands-on mechatronics intern to support the development of our first Developmental Instrumentation Pressure Vessel (PV), which will serve as a key component in monitoring the health and performance of the power generation taking place within our Nodes. This project will be highly cross-functional – requiring close collaboration with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to design, assemble, and validate a prototype that integrates a suite of sensors into the Node’s structure and associated electronics inside a pressure-rated vessel.
The intern will be responsible for:
- Selecting and integrating appropriate cameras, lights, and data acquisition systems
- Designing mechanical layouts and mounts for internal instrumentation
- Supporting design, fabrication and assembly of the prototype vessel
- Collaborating with software engineers on sensor interfacing and data access
- Performing initial testing to ensure reliable data collection in an integrated system
This project offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to multidisciplinary design, test infrastructure development, and real-world system integration challenges in a fast-paced hardware development environment.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications- Working toward a degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- Experience with basic instrumentation and data acquisition systems
- Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks)
- Familiarity with embedded Linux and scripting/data analysis tools (e.g., Python, MATLAB)
- Understanding of power systems including battery packs, voltage regulation, and current monitoring
- Comfortable with hands-on prototyping and troubleshooting
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
On-site, our offices, lab, shop, and manufacturing facilities are located in and near Portland, Oregon. Due to the nature of working in a lab and production environment, this position requires consistent on-site work.
Compensation & Benefits- This is an hourly position with a rate of $42 per hour.
- This is a full time position which will be 40 hours per week.
- This is a short term internship that will be for 12-16 week.
- As a paid intern, you will not be eligible for Company-sponsored benefits. You will accrue paid sick time in accordance with Oregon Law. You will also be paid for any holidays that occur during your internship.
This is a short-term posting, and we will be accepting applications until Monday, June 16. Please ensure your application is submitted by this date, as we will begin reviewing submissions after the posting closes.
