Teledyne Qioptiq is a world leader in the design, development, manufacture and support of complex electro-optical components, modules and subsystems, Tactical solutions for the Dismounted warfighter,  space cover glass for satellite applications, Heads Up Displays (HUD) and Helmet Mounted Displays (HMD) for military and commercial aerospace applications, energetic devices and subsystems, including Electronic Safe, Arm and Fire (ESAF) devices, Firing Modules (FMs), Ignition Safety Devices (ISDs), custom energetics, and Blue Chip® detonators.

Position Outline

To establish Coating process plannings in line with VCP’s from Vacuum Coating Development Engineer. To investigate day to day process issues, identifying reasons for product cost variances, resolution of technical issues arising on all products, and to implement the appropriate corrective action to minimise defect repetition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete process plannings/routings on AX system

  • Support cost margin variances/investigations on a weekly basis (KPI’s)

  • Review coating status of Order files (specifications, design status etc.)

  • Review tooling availability/requirements and order as required.

  • Review drawing configuration status

  • Amend batch sizes /chamber loading rules as required in conjunction with Optical Process Engineers

  • Support repeat and new order enquiries stage (AX Opportunities)

  • Involved in day to day process issues and advise on resolution of production process problems with particular reference to ongoing quality issues (FRACAS and Problem Solving A3)

  • Support daily standard work processes (GEMBA, TIER Meetings, MRB, FRB)

  • May require operating a plant in support of productionisation of new coating processes (sign off of VCP’S) and/or commissioning of new coating chambers

Personal Specification:

It is essential that all candidates have the following:

  • An understanding of coating principles.

  • A high standard of general education, and conversant with Microsoft office applications - Word, Excel and PowerPoint. and should be comfortable with scientific methods

  • An engineering or scientific bias – providing the ability to have a technically credible dialog with the engineering and production teams.

  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing methodologies supported by Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (as a minimum) Certification

  • Sound commercial acumen, confidence and professionalism with excellent communication and interpersonal skills providing the ability to represent the manufacturing engineering department at all levels.

  • High motivation, responsiveness and focus, also possessing meticulous attention to detail – crucial for ensuring demanding manufacturing process requirements are fully understood and met. 

It would be desirable if candidates could demonstrate the following:

  • Comprehensive working knowledge of Mechanical or Electrical standards required for high precision manufacturing

  • Familiarity with continuous improvement and lean manufacturing methodologies

  • Knowledge of interferometry and profilometry, along with experience of polishing materials and associated processes

  • Relevant Engineering qualifications

  • Knowledge / experience in AS9100/ISO9001 quality environment
