You would be the 3rd engineer on the team, helping us build out our home inspection app which is a progressive web app, used primarily on mobile devices. You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with and learn from experienced engineers and contribute to an important project for our company and mission. There’s also potential for a full-time opportunity based on performance and business needs.<h3>Responsibilities</h3><ul><li>Live our Mission and Values - Help advance Ekotrope’s mission to empower people with data and technology that drive sustainability in the built environment.</li><li>Build and improve our inspection app - Develop and enhance features for our React Native/Expo progressive web app, which helps home energy inspectors collect data efficiently in the field.</li><li>Work across the stack - Contribute to backend development in Java, Hibernate, and MariaDB, supporting data management, API endpoints, and offline synchronization.</li><li>Implement new form capabilities - Add new field types, improve validation, and support organization-specific customizations to make our app more flexible and useful.</li><li>Enhance user experience - Build clean, intuitive UI components for displaying inspection data, reports, and photos, with a focus on accessibility and performance.</li><li>Support quality and reliability - Write and maintain automated tests, fix bugs, and help optimize app performance for users in the field.</li><li>Collaborate and learn - Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Share ideas and feedback to help improve both the product and the development process.</li><li>Use modern tools - Incorporate AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to enhance productivity and explore new approaches to problem-solving.</li><li>Grow through mentorship - Work closely with experienced engineers who will help you learn best practices in software design, testing, and enterprise-scale development.</li></ul> <h3>Requirements</h3><a href="https://www.masscec.com/clean-energy-internships">MassCEC Internship Eligibility</a><ul><li>Resident of Massachusetts or current student or recent grad (within last year) of a MA school</li></ul>Education &amp; Experience<ul><li>Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience through bootcamps, self-study, or personal projects.</li><li>Some experience building software, through coursework, internships, or independent projects, ideally in mobile, web, or full-stack development.</li><li>Curiosity and a growth mindset - you’re eager to learn and comfortable asking questions.</li></ul>Technical Skills<ul><li>Familiarity with JavaScript or TypeScript, and interest in React or React Native development.</li><li>Basic understanding of APIs, databases, and object-oriented programming (experience with Java, Hibernate, or MariaDB is a plus).</li><li>Experience using Git and collaborating through version control.</li><li>Interest in testing, debugging, and improving code performance.</li><li>Openness to learning and experimenting with AI-assisted development tools.</li></ul>Preferred (Nice to Have)<ul><li>Hands-on experience with React Native, Expo, or other mobile/web frameworks.</li><li>Familiarity with backend development, database integration, or form systems.</li><li>Exposure to progressive web apps or offline-first architectures.</li><li>Interest in sustainability, green technology, or energy efficiency.</li></ul>Personal Qualities<ul><li>Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.</li><li>Collaborative and communicative - you enjoy working with others and learning from feedback.</li><li>Self-motivated and adaptable, with the ability to take initiative and follow through.</li><li>Alignment with Ekotrope’s <a href="https://www.ekotrope.com/about-us">Vision, Mission &amp; Values</a>, and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.</li></ul><h3>Timing</h3>We are looking for someone who is available to start this winter.<h3>Why Join Ekotrope</h3><ol><li>Impact: Be part of a mission-driven company that is making a big impact on the environmental sustainability of homes throughout the USA.
