This individual will be responsible for leading a small team of engineers to design hardware for various systems that power and control the aircraft. This position requires a relentless drive for engineering excellence and the ability to balance complex competing objectives and priorities. The position will work cross-functionally and be responsible for the entire development cycle from early architecture through production. Specifically, they will:</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Design components, subassemblies, and systems</li> <li>Perform analysis (models/simulation) to support design decisions</li> <li>Plan/execute development tests to support design decisions</li> <li>Work with external vendors and internal manufacturing/fabrication teams to build hardware</li> <li>Work with the testing team to support verification testing of hardware</li> <li>Solve complex multi-physics engineering problems</li> <li>Manage and mentor a team of engineers</li> <li>Lead informal cross-functional teams/efforts</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>B.S. or higher in mechanical engineering</li> <li>8+ years of demonstrated engineering experience - preferably “full-stack” with exposure to test, design, equipment/component selection, hands-on builds, bring-up and troubleshooting</li> <li>Experience as a team lead, manager, or mentor of engineers </li> <li>Proficiency with professional 3D modeling software, preferably with Catia 3D Experience </li> <li>Proficiency in mechanical design, materials selection, kinematics, troubleshooting, and analysis</li> <li>Excellent problem solving and communication skills</li> <li>Strong analytical background – able to use first principles to drive/inform design</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>M.S. in mechanical engineering</li> <li>12+ years of demonstrated engineering experience</li> <li>Experience with finite element simulation tools</li> <li>Experience with electric powertrains or other electromechanical systems (power electronics, battery systems, motors/actuators)</li> <li>Strong fundamentals in fluid flow, thermals, structures</li> <li>Experience with instrumentation selection/procurement and data acquisition</li> <li>Electrical enclosure design experience</li> <li>Experience taking design(s) through production</li> <li>Experience managing a team in self-directed engineering projects</li></ul><h2>Additional Information</h2><p>Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $151,000-$201,500yr.
