In this role, you will be working exclusively with the cell testing team to generate insight into the battery performance for VTOL electric aircraft. The Joby Aviation team is made up of extremely talented, hardworking, proactive, and hands-on individuals, operating in a very fast-paced and rewarding environment. We are looking to expand this team with like-minded individuals looking to make a mark in the transportation industry.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Conduct research and experiments on different batteries using cycling equipment</li> <li>Occasionally complete cell teardowns for materials investigation</li> <li>Conduct experiments or measurements for individual cells to characterize physical and electrochemical properties</li> <li>Develop methods and tools to analyze data sets and communicate the key findings to multidisciplinary teams for product development</li> <li>Work closely with the following teams:</li> <ul>  <li>Equipment design team to facilitate project equipment requirements</li>  <li>Data Science team to consume and produce findings from large data sets</li>  <li>Lab Technicians to facilitate lab functions, operation, experiment setup, and monitoring</li> </ul></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>Passionate and excited about cell/battery and EVTOL</li> <li>Pursuing B.S. or above in Electrochemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or related engineering discipline</li> <li>Heading into junior or senior year of undergraduate degree or above at time of internship</li> <li>Available Spring/Summer 2026</li> <li>Knowledge of Li-ion cell chemistry and mechanisms</li> <li>Experience with testing equipment such as battery cyclers, potentiostats, and electrochemical cells</li> <li>Strong work ethic with an affinity for team-oriented work</li> <li>Strong attention to detail, documentation, and implementation of operating procedures</li> <li>Capable of balancing and prioritizing multiple tasks and projects</li> <li>Capable of prioritizing safe practice in the workplace</li> <li>Experience in relevant programming languages. (Python, MATLAB)</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>Experience with cell teardowns and characterization techniques</li> <li>Glove box or cell fabrication experience</li> <li>Proficient at setting up and writing scripts for battery cycling equipment. (Maccor, Arbin, Neware, etc.)</li> <li>History of experiments to obtain data supporting a BMS and/or performance modeling of a cell level technology</li> <li>Expertise in cell fabrication</li> <li>Experience with large form factor cell/pack handling</li> <li>Research / previous intern experience on Li-ion cell</li> <li>Proficient in relevant programming languages. The pay range for graduate interns with a Bachelor, Master, and/or Ph.D. degree is $5,550-$8,200/month.
