Our team works on improving data quality, collection, and intake from our software applications, internal systems, and other external sources. We also build the tools that deliver insights and value to customers directly, whether that be dashboards, APIs, or something else.You'll be working closely with our cross-functional team of folks with software &amp; data engineering, data analyst, and account and product management expertise. You will be contributing to our growing data business and helping solve challenging problems at the intersection of sustainability, data engineering, and data mining.Our team works in a hybrid format. We are based in the greater Boston area, and we have a strong preference for those located in the area that can come into our downtown office regularly. Team members typically come into the office at least one day per week, but this can vary.<h2>Responsibilities</h2>Your day-to-day work could include a variety of impactful projects. We’ve listed a sample below. Given the growing nature of our company, however, it’s likely that specifics will change over time as we develop new products in our growing market segment.<ul><li>Make architectural improvements to our data APIs</li><li>Add new data collection capabilities or refactor existing data objects in our Saas applications to support our data business</li><li>Build and maintain photo data processing pipelines using LLMs and other AI tools for data extraction</li><li>Set up automated data quality monitoring systems</li><li>Build API pollers to ingest external data into our models</li><li>Work with Apache Spark (Scala) on AWS Glue for data processing</li><li>Implement solutions to fortify our data and engineering security</li><li>Assist with data-related customer support requests on an ad-hoc basis</li><li>Collaborate across teams to contribute to engineering initiatives beyond the data team</li></ul><h2>Requirements</h2><h3>Required Experience and Attributes</h3><ul><li>1-4+ years of experience as a software engineer</li><li>Strong Java programming skills</li><li>SQL experience, ideally with PostgreSQL knowledge</li><li>High capacity to learn new information quickly</li><li>Strong sense of curiosity and problem-solving ability</li><li>Demonstrated accountability and humility - comfortable asking for help, asking deeper questions, and collaborating with teammates</li><li>Commitment to our mission of empowering people with environmental data to drive sustainability</li></ul><h3>Desired Skills (We Don't Expect You to Have All of These)</h3>We think that an ideal candidate would have a majority of these skills. We believe the right candidate will be able to pick up any missing skills as they begin this role.<ul><li>Experience working with Apache Spark (we use Spark Scala on AWS Glue)</li><li>Familiarity with AWS cloud resources (Lambda, RDS, EC2, Glue)</li><li>Experience working with photo data pipelines, especially with computer vision/LLM data mining from photos or AI tools for data mining</li><li>Experience with API design and maintenance</li><li>Experience setting up automated data quality monitoring systems</li><li>Scala and Python programming experience</li><li>Experience using Maven as a build tool</li><li>Experience with Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) and Domain Mapping</li></ul><h3>Nice to Haves</h3><ul><li>Familiarity with front-end design principles</li><li>Experience with Docker</li><li>Experience with threat modeling or other security practices</li><li>Familiarity with any of the following industries:<ul><li>The HERS Rating industry</li><li>ICC Codes / Residential Building and Energy Codes</li><li>ESG Reporting</li><li>Product manufacturers in the built environment space (HVAC, Windows, Insulation, etc.)</li></ul></li><li>Located in the Boston area, able to come to the office and to company retreats</li></ul><h2>Why Join Ekotrope?</h2><ul><li>Impact: Be part of a mission-driven company that is making a big impact on the environmental sustainability of homes throughout the USA.
