Growth in biofuels and circular economy has been accompanied by increased interest in certification programs designed for this industry to meet the growing demand, including: ISCC EU, ISCC PLUS, RSB EU RED, RSB Advanced Products, and other similar certification initiatives.SCS has developed standardized protocols for evaluating the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculations provided by companies conducting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the Carbon Intensity of their biofuels and biobased products. As the program grows, there is increasing demand for Life Cycle Assessment of biofuels and biobased products, both to develop the relevant methodologies, as well as to verify the calculations provided to SCS auditors.The Technical Specialist I, Biofuels, Lifecycle, GHG has a technical background in quality systems and chemical processing, ideally with knowledge of biofuel production, including biodiesel, HVO/Renewable Diesel, and ethanol. The successful candidate is self-motivated, comfortable working independently, and has a passion for working on environmental sustainability issues. This position supports our existing ISCC and RSB certification teams globally, primarily conducting remote GHG reviews.Relevant Standards/Schemes<ul> <li>International Sustainability &amp; Carbon Certification (ISCC)</li> <li>Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB)</li></ul>Essential Duties and Responsibilities Technical Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Review (95%)<ul> <li>Complete and deliver GHG reports and related comments to auditors and program staff on time and according to program requirements</li> <li>Interact with clients and audit teams to follow up on nonconformity closure when necessary</li> <li>Support the development of new procedures and processes to review GHG calculations efficiently and effectively</li> <li>Communicate in a timely and professional manner with internal staff and external clients</li></ul>Greenhouse Gas LCA Calculations (5%)<ul> <li>Occasional support to companies not being certified by SCS to perform GHG emissions calculations (consulting activity)</li></ul>Quality and Program Development<ul> <li>Deliver verification services in accordance with SCS Corporate and Program Quality requirements</li> <li>Support the SCS quality management system through maintenance of competency records including training log, completed calibration activities, and up to date knowledge of SCS program and external scheme requirements</li></ul>Minimum Qualifications<ul> <li>Master's Degree in a technical field (e.g., chemistry or related) with 2+ years of experience completing Life Cycle Assessments, ideally for biofuels or bio-based materials, according to ISO 14040/44 requirements or</li> <li>Bachelor's Degree in a technical field (e.g., chemistry or related) with 5+ years of experience completing Life Cycle Assessments, ideally for biofuels or bio-based materials, according to ISO 14040/44 requirements</li> <li>Experience using ecoinvent database and major LCA software (e.g., SimaPro, GaBi, openLCA)</li> <li>Experience working with international biofuels LCA models, including the EU RED (e.g., Biograce, GHGenius, RenovaCalc, GREET)</li> <li>Understand the principles of Life Cycle Accounting, according to ISO 14064/65 and other international standards and guidelines (e.g., PEF framework, WRI GHG Protocol, Together for Sustainability guideline, etc.)</li> <li>Strong technical writing, organization, and prioritization skills</li> <li>Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines</li> <li>Strong customer service and teamwork orientation</li> <li>Complete fluency in English with professional experience that involves written and verbal communication</li> <li>Proficient with business software including Outlook, Word, Excel, and database management</li> <li>Initiative, good judgment, and ability to work independently under pressure in a changing environment</li></ul>Preferred Qualifications<ul> <li>PhD in a technical field (e.g., chemistry or related)</li> <li>Experience working with soil carbon accumulation and related models (e.g., RothC model, Century model, DAYCENT model)</li> <li>Experience with LCA and GHG accounting for green hydrogen and e-fuels</li> <li>Knowledge of biofuel production, including biodiesel, HVO/renewable diesel, sustainable aviation fuel, and ethanol</li> <li>Experience with bio-based materials carbon intensity calculation, including bio-based plastics and chemicals</li> <li>Multi-language proficiency</li></ul>The above description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.
