With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.</p><h2>Overview</h2><p>Joby Aviation is looking for a hands-on engineer who doesn't stay in their lane. You'll join our Ground Support Equipment team in San Carlos, working on the off-aircraft systems that keep our VTOL aircraft flying: charging infrastructure, thermal conditioning equipment, and the embedded controls that tie it all together. This role lives at the intersection of electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software. The best candidates we've hired are just as comfortable writing embedded C++ as they are reading a schematic or bolting together a prototype. Built something complicated on your own time? A high-voltage EV conversion, an off-grid power system, a competitive robot? That's exactly the kind of instinct we're looking for.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul> <li>Develop an integration plan for a system consisting of electrical, mechatronic, mechanical, embedded and hydronic subsystems</li> <li>Select components including but not limited to sensors, interconnects, actuators, gateways and controllers that solve for cost, performance and functionality</li> <li>Assist in assembly and integration of prototype systems</li> <li>Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting efforts for system-level failures, especially those involving interactions between hardware, firmware and software</li> <li>Script routines to exercise functionality of systems</li> <li>Create documentation for manufacturing test, commissioning, maintenance and operation</li> <li>Support system function testing and perform functional testing</li> <li>Support system certification and perform certification testing</li> <li>Diagnose operational issues with multi-disciplinary causes remotely and on site</li> <li>Travel domestically and internationally to support field deployments — for the right candidate, an opportunity to see where this technology lands in the real world</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field and 5+ years of related technical experience (including mechanical, electrical, computer and robotics / mechatronics engineering)</li> <li>Strong fundamentals in electrical and mechanical engineering</li> <li>Solid understanding of DC/AC circuits, signal integrity, and power electronics</li> <li>Solid understanding of networking topologies and communication protocols (eg CAN, Modbus, RS485, Ethernet, TCP/IP, VLANS and MQTT)</li> <li>Fluent in C/C++, Python</li> <li>Comfortable with mechanical and electrical CAD software</li> <li>Experience reading and creating electrical schematics</li> <li>Hands-on experience with lab equipment for testing and debugging (oscilloscopes, multimeters, data acquisition systems)</li> <li>Fluency in embedded systems — comfortable diving into a codebase to understand system behavior, not just interface with it</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field and 8+ years of related technical experience (including mechanical, electrical, computer and robotics / mechatronics engineering)</li> <li>Experience with industrial automation equipment</li> <li>Experience with thermal and fluid process equipment</li> <li>Experience with electric vehicle charging protocols and standards</li></ul><h2>Additional Information</h2><p>Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $137,700 - $221,700/yr.
