Job DescriptionAECOM is seeking an experienced Lead Engineer – HVDC Systems to support Project Management Consultancy, Owner’s Engineer, technical advisory and design-review assignments for HVDC converter stations and associated transmission infrastructure.The role will focus on reviewing contractor and OEM designs, ensuring compliance with employer requirements, applicable standards, grid-code obligations and project performance criteria.Key Responsibilities<ul><li>Lead technical review of HVDC system design, converter-station configuration and overall system architecture.</li><li>Review contractor and OEM engineering documents, including design criteria, specifications, calculations, studies, drawings and technical reports.</li><li>Verify compliance with project requirements, approved design basis, applicable IEC, IEEE, CIGRE and utility standards.</li><li>Review HVDC system ratings, operating modes, control philosophy, protection philosophy and equipment performance requirements.</li><li>Review power-system studies, including:<ul><li>Load flow and fault level</li><li>Reactive-power and voltage control</li><li>Harmonic and power-quality analysis</li><li>Electromagnetic transient studies</li><li>Insulation coordination</li><li>Grid-code compliance</li><li>System stability and weak-grid performance</li></ul></li><li>Review design and specifications of major HVDC equipment, including:<ul><li>Converter transformers</li><li>Valves and valve cooling systems</li><li>Reactors and harmonic filters</li><li>AC and DC switchgear</li><li>Instrument transformers</li><li>Surge arresters</li><li>Capacitor and reactive-power compensation systems</li><li>Auxiliary power and earthing systems</li></ul></li><li>Review control, protection, SCADA, telecommunications and cybersecurity interfaces.</li><li>Review electrical-loss calculations, efficiency guarantees and thermal-performance assessments.</li><li>Review Reliability, Availability and Maintainability studies, redundancy philosophy and spare-parts strategy.</li><li>Identify design gaps, technical risks, interface issues and non-compliances, and recommend corrective actions.</li><li>Participate in design-review meetings, HAZID, interface workshops, technical clarification meetings and value-engineering reviews.</li><li>Review vendor technical bids, deviations, data sheets and compliance statements.</li><li>Support factory inspections, FAT, site inspections, SAT, commissioning and performance testing.</li><li>Monitor closure of design comments, technical queries, concessions and non-conformance reports.</li><li>Coordinate with transmission line, cable, substation, civil, structural and project-management teams.</li><li>Provide technical advice to the client during procurement, construction, commissioning and handover.</li><li>Mentor engineers and support technical assurance across PMC and Owner’s Engineer assignments</li></ul>
