Climate Analytics is a non-profit organisation based in Berlin, Germany with offices in New York, USA, Lom&eacute;, Togo and Perth, Australia which brings together interdisciplinary expertise in the scientific and policy aspects of climate change. Our activities include: synthesising and advancing scientific knowledge in the area of climate change science, policy and impacts, providing science and policy support to the Least Developed Countries and Small Island Developing States in the international climate negotiations and the tracking and analysing of national climate policies in the global context with the Climate Action Tracker.

Data Engineer (f/m/d)

Job description We are currently seeking a Data Engineer for our international and diverse Climate Policy Team (CPT). The team is engaged in various projects on climate change mitigation, in particular on energy system transformation, the 1.5°C global warming limit and the evaluation of national climate action. This includes flagship projects, such as the Climate Action Tracker and the National Pathways Explorer, for which data is being processed and analysed in-house and then published on the respective project websites. As a Data Engineer you will play a critical role in designing, building and maintaining our data infrastructure, ensuring efficient and accurate data processing, storage and retrieval.  Your Responsibilities<ul><li>You will help to build and maintain a data platform for advanced analytics and climate modelling, spanning data science and data engineering work.</li><li>Contribute to the full lifecycle of data platform development from design and deployment to continuous improvement</li><li>Strengthen data pipelines reliability, observability, and automation through code and tooling improvements.</li><li>Collaborate with data scientists and researchers to define data processing requirements.</li><li>Support AI/LLM initiatives across the organisation from a data and infrastructure perspective.</li><li>Help develop backend data services and APIs that expose curated datasets to internal and external consumers and applications.</li><li>Monitor, anticipate, and resolve operational or data quality issues in data pipelines. Required:<ul><li>Python</li><li>SQL</li><li>PostgreSQL</li><li>Object storage (like S3/Minio)</li><li>Containers (like Docker)</li><li>Git</li><li>CI/CD principles</li></ul> Nice to have:<ul><li>Pandas/Polar/DuckDB or other framework for data processing</li><li>Conda</li><li>Monitoring tools (like Prometheus, Grafana and Elasticsearch)</li><li>Infrastructure as code tool (like Terraform or Ansible)</li><li>AI‑driven productivity tools </li></ul> Your profile You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills: <ul><li>You have a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, ideally with a specialization in Data Engineering or DevOps, or a related field.</li><li>You have gained initial experience as a Data Engineer in a production environment.</li><li>Foundational notions in data modeling, data structures, algorithms, design patterns, optimization.</li><li>Familiarity with the relevant tech skills mentioned above.</li><li>Basic understanding of data pipelines, APIs, or backend services.</li><li>Exposure to data engineering in the context of Agentic AI, Generative AI, Machine Learning, or Business Intelligence across different types of data formats (structured vs unstructured) and processing methods.</li><li>Passionate about working at the intersection of Climate Science and Data Engineering (tell us about relevant projects you’ve worked on!).</li><li>A problem solver, a fixer, and a creative technologist.
