With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.</p><h2>Overview</h2><p>We're looking for a Test Equipment Design Engineer to design, build, and integrate Test Enabling Hardware (TEH) supporting program test milestones — from test stands and fixtures to instrumentation and flight-critical component test setups. This is a hands-on IC role covering the full lifecycle: concept, design, fabrication, integration, and formal release.</p><h2>Responsibilities</h2><h2><strong>Design &amp; Development</strong></h2><ul> <li>Architect test fixturing and mechanical layout from ambiguous or evolving requirements</li> <li>Design hardware to assemble, install, and validate/verify flight-critical components and systems, partnering with Airframe/Actuators, Propulsion, Avionics, and Software teams to capture design requirements</li> <li>Design test stands and fixtures for electrical, thermal, static, and dynamic testing, including HIL systems</li> <li>Select and integrate instrumentation (sensors, DAQ, power supplies, signal conditioning)</li> <li>Create electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and CAD models</li></ul><p><strong>Build &amp; Integration</strong></p><ul> <li>Develop drawing packages, BOMs, and assembly instructions; procure hardware and coordinate manufacturing with internal/external shops</li> <li>Fabricate components using machine shop equipment (lathe, mill, welder) as needed</li> <li>Lead integration and commissioning, including on-the-fly design changes to keep pace with hardware modifications</li> <li>Troubleshoot and debug test system issues during setup and execution</li> <li>Partner with Lab Operations to ensure safe integration into the P&amp;E Test Lab (power, compressed air, facility readiness)</li></ul><h2><strong>Documentation &amp; Compliance</strong></h2><ul> <li>Prepare BOMs, drawings, and documentation to support formal release; ensure FAA certification/qualification compliance where applicable</li> <li>Follow formal release, configuration management, and change control processes</li></ul><h2>Required</h2><ul> <li>Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related field, plus 8+ years of relevant experience in test/mechanical equipment design (or equivalent)</li> <li>Strong mechanical design experience, including heavily loaded, high-precision components, weldments, and hydraulic/pneumatic systems</li> <li>Hands-on machine shop skills (lathe, mill, welder)</li> <li>Proficiency with CAD tools and electrical schematic design</li> <li>Experience with machine control panel wiring and design</li> <li>Track record taking projects from concept through commissioning</li> <li>Strong problem-solving and communication skills; comfortable working hands-on in a lab/shop environment</li></ul><h2>Desired</h2><ul> <li>Software skills for test automation/data acquisition (Python, LabVIEW, C#)</li> <li>Working knowledge of SCADA systems</li> <li>Familiarity with FAA certification and safety-critical testing</li> <li>Experience with HIL test systems and powertrain/electronics testing</li> <li>Experience within an IPT structure</li></ul><h2>Additional Information</h2><p>Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base pay for this position is $141,600 - $194,700/yr.
