Schardt was a pioneering voice for the environment and witness to some of the most seminal events in American history as a Time magazine correspondent traveling with Martin Luther King while covering the civil rights movement. Throughout his peripatetic 50-year career, Schardt reported on and acted on behalf of social justice. Al Gore states, “Through his remarkably diverse career, Arlie Schardt lived a life of purpose and impact,” said the former Vice President. “He was a champion for civil rights and an early pioneer of the environmental movement. I valued greatly his commitment to public service and will always be grateful for the invaluable roles he played on my Presidential campaign.” Schardt joined Friends of the Earth (FOE), serving as Chairman of the Board from 2009 until June 2019 when he was named chair emeritus in honor of his service. According to Erich Pica, president of FOE, “Arlie was instrumental in tripling the size of the organization and broadening its mandate to combine his concerns for social and racial justice with environmentalism.”  For our program, we are prioritizing communities that are underrepresented in the mainstream environmental movement. In addition to substantive work with the teams, the Fellowship program also includes networking and career development opportunities.  About our Communications Department and Fellowship Position: The Communications Department maintains Friends of the Earth’s brand and works to tell the organization’s stories, using traditional, social, digital, and visual means to achieve campaign objectives. At FOE, the Communications department encompasses press and traditional media, web and social media, graphics and multimedia. We develop communications strategies for the organization’s campaigns and work with our colleagues to share their important work with the world. Working closely with our colleagues in the programs departments, we craft messaging and create visuals that help audiences understand wonky, complex issues that impact people and the planet.  The ASM Communications Fellow will work directly with FOE’s Digital Communications Manager to develop content for the organization’s social media feeds and websites. The Fellow will play a crucial role in creating content that highlights ongoing and new campaign work. The Fellow will work in collaboration with the design team and programs staff to brainstorm and outline written, video, and graphic design content.    RESPONSIBILITIES:  <ul><li>Outline posts and draft copy for FOE’s social media feeds based on incoming requests from campaign staff   </li></ul><ul><li>Work with other members of the Communications Department to brainstorm and develop creative ideas to showcase FOE’s programmatic work on social media  </li></ul><ul><li>Write scripts and film oneself for video content that will be shared on FOE’s social media feeds   </li></ul><ul><li>Draft content for FOE and FOE Action’s websites, including victory stories that highlight campaign wins and SEO content to draw in organic users   </li></ul><ul><li>Participate in regular strategy meetings between the digital communications and the design/multimedia teams of the Communications Department. </li></ul> REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: No specific academic or professional experience is required, but we are looking for people who are passionate about the environment and/or social justice. From fracking projects in Argentina to liquified natural gas development in Mozambique, this finance has not only resulted in pollution and environmental degradation, but displacement, violent conflict and human rights abuses. Public finance flows through several different types of institutions like multilateral development banks, bilateral development banks, and export credit agencies. These are all institutions that collect, invest, and distribute our public funds. As part of our international sustainable finance campaign, we watchdog government-backed institutions that fund energy and mining projects overseas. Our campaign works to end public financing of fossil fuels, to give a voice to affected communities, and to push institutions to responsibly invest public money in renewable energy.  This position will learn about international finance and how the U.S. and other governments/institutions finance energy and mining projects all over the world. The fellow will select a research topic and research and write a 5–10-page piece. They will be provided with the opportunity to represent Friends of the Earth in meetings with government officials and speak publicly about the research that they are conducting. In addition, they will be exposed to both Congress and the executive branch to both get a better understanding of how civil society advocates for progressive causes, as well as get exposure to see if they would have any interest in working for Congress or an executive agency.  RESPONSIBILITIES: <ul><li>Research, write, and publish at least one paper on international finance  </li></ul><ul><li>Attend and potentially lead meetings advocating for the end to international public finance of fossil fuels and increase oversight of (and possibly opposition) international finance for mining projects.  </li></ul><ul><li>Discussing papers and topics with the press, including drafting press releases with quotes and in interviews.  </li></ul> REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: No specific academic or professional experience is required, but we are looking for people who are passionate about the environment and/or social justice. Our fellow will assist our AgTech campaign, which works to transform public policy to establish appropriate safety assessment and regulations for agriculture technology, such as digital agriculture and genetic engineering, and products such as GMO crops, insects, soil, and animals; and to keep poorly regulated agricultural pesticides and GMOs out of our agricultural system.  We work to advance regenerative organic and agroecological farming systems that are inherently healthier and that pose fewer risks for people, pollinators, animals, and the planet.  The fellow will become an integral member of our dynamic Food and Agriculture Team and gain valuable skills and experience in research, strategic campaign development, online and traditional media communications, corporate and non-profit engagement, and public outreach, education and organizing on the cutting edge of environmental advocacy. This position will introduce the fellow to a wide range of colleagues in environmental, social justice and legislative areas. In addition to substantive work with the teams, the Fellowship program also includes networking and career development opportunities.  About our Oceans and Vessels Team and Fellowship Position: For the past 20 years, our Oceans &amp; Vessels program has provided strong leadership to protect our oceans, the tens of millions of people who live near them and the marine life from the threats of oil spills, air pollution, sewage releases, plastic pollution, and anthropogenic ocean noise. As vessel traffic increases and shipping trade between Asia and U.S. ports continues to expand, vessels are generating a growing volume of air and water pollution and are causing greater ecosystem harms. Despite dumping massive amounts of pollution into our air and water, the commercial shipping industry has long avoided meaningful pollution controls. In addition, governments are looking to industrialize our oceans by continuing to extract fossil fuels and expand our reliance on fossil fuels by expanding the creation of plastics which harm communities and destroy marine life.    This position will focus on supporting the petrochemical campaign. The petrochemical industry, including plastics, fertilizers and other products derived from fossil oil and gas, is not only polluting our oceans but also contributing to the climate crisis, threatening global public health, and endangering communities on the frontlines of production. We are working to stop petrochemical pollution at the source by blocking financing for the buildout of new plastics and other petrochem facilities in the United States. We work closely with coalitions, especially grassroots organizations fighting off new builds and expansions in their communities. We produce cutting-edge research and reports to inform our campaigning and engagement and correspond with a broad range of financial institutions, from major banks to pension funds.   RESPONSIBILITIES:  Research and Writing:  <ul><li>Assist financial institutions in developing policies on the petrochemical sector and collaborate on finance and supply chain research and reports </li><li>Conduct research around port electrification proposals </li><li>Conduct research for the cruise ship report card and advocate for stronger cruise ship regulations at the state level</li></ul>Coordination and Coalition Building:  <ul></ul><ul><li>Support frontline site fights and engagement in the global plastics treaty process </li></ul><ul><li>Help coordinate public pressure campaigns and inside engagement with financial institutions to exclude petrochemical companies and develop policies on the sector </li></ul><ul><li>Engage with the International Maritime Organization to improve Arctic and ocean regulation and support access for Indigenous peoples </li></ul> REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: No specific academic or professional experience is required, but we are looking for people who are passionate about the environment and/or social justice. Build community partnerships that will deepen the work in California and expand the reach and impact of the Climate-Friendly School Food Program in California and beyond. Results Oriented: Manage and oversee the program's budget, including tracking expenditures and ensuring adherence to budgetary constraints. Maintain best practices for data management related to programs metrics, contact lists, project timelines, and funder reports. Oversee the allocation of tasks and responsibilities, ensuring the project timelines and deliverables are met. Collect and evaluate qualitative and quantitative data of K-12 school nutrition menu shifts to document impacts of the program and greenhouse gas emissions reductions.   Collaborative Communicator: Collaborate with senior leadership to develop strategies for scaling and enhancing the program, leveraging team strengths and resources. Collaborate with program consultants, community partners, and school nutrition experts to advocate for policy change at the state and federal levels.  Lead Friends of the Earth’s Peer Learning Sessions by organizing and facilitating quarterly meetings and in-person gatherings with K-12 school nutrition service directors and stakeholders. Offers are determined based on the relevant skills and experience required for the position.  Who You Are:  Transformational and Authentic Leader: Set the strategic direction and focus of the campaign to advance policies to better facilitate values-aligned, plant-forward menus and expand healthy, plant-based, and organic options in K-12 schools. Support efforts to expand our climate-friendly school food program into new states. Supervise and manage interns and consultants as needed. Relationship Builder: Cultivate strong and enduring relationships with Capitol Hill offices, relevant agency officials, and state lawmakers, lobbying them in support of legislative and regulatory priorities. Manage and grow our coalition of school food stakeholders, helping to propel a grassroots movement for climate-friendly school food inclusive of youth, parents, school foodservice professionals, and farm to school advocates. Results Oriented: Design and implement strategic campaign plans in conjunction with the Climate-Friendly Food team. Track, monitor, analyze, and report on legislation and regulations pertaining to priority issues. Develop and demonstrate expertise on K-12 school meal policies. Conduct research and develop reports, op-eds, briefs, factsheets, web content, and other campaign materials to educate allies, opinion leaders, policymakers, the press, and the public. Organize events and meetings such as webinars, policy briefings, and fly-ins. Collaborative Communicator: Work with our communications department to advance campaign objectives via traditional and social media, including developing relationships with reporters, press monitoring, and drafting press releases and social media content. Represent Friends of the Earth in media interviews, conferences, at public events, and in lobby meetings to support campaign objectives and reach key audiences. Work with the Food and Agriculture team and the Development department to support fundraising, including contributing to foundation proposals and membership materials and cultivating relationships with donors and foundations. Required Qualifications:    <ul><li>6-8 years of experience in research, campaigning, or policy advocacy (not necessarily environmental or school food).  </li></ul><ul><li>Bachelor’s degree (in any field) or equivalent work experience. </li></ul><ul><li>Expert knowledge around child nutrition programs, industrial animal agriculture and sustainable food systems, and/or the intersection between food and climate. </li></ul><ul><li>Knowledge and understanding of legislative and executive branch processes and a strategic approach to both policy and politics. </li></ul><ul><li>A demonstrated commitment to the environment and social and racial justice. </li></ul><ul><li>Strong oral and written communication skills and comfort with presenting material to a wide range of audiences, including the public, the press, businesses and government officials.
