Carbon Balance Initiative is an NGO initiative born out of the University of Oxford. We strive to put conditions on fossil fuel production to protect the climate from any remaining fossil fuel use. We work with the climate movement, academia and policymakers to achieve 1.5°C, store carbon and protect nature.
Our Mission
We support policymakers with research and long-term policy thinking that keep fossil fuel producers accountable and ensure we reach durable net zero. As an NGO, we educate and advocate on two main topics:
Achieving durable and geological net zero, in which any carbon dioxide still extracted at the point of net zero is stored permanently in geological storage
Regulating for producer responsibility, in which oil and gas companies are held accountable for their emissions and responsible for storing any remaining carbon extracted up to the time of net zero
Our advocacy efforts are focused primarily on the UK and the EU, with some projects in Norway and internationally.
Our Values
Dynamic and responsive 🪴 - As a small organisation, we embrace a fast-paced start-up culture, moving quickly in response to new opportunities and challenges.
Deep collaboration 🫂 - We believe reaching climate goals depends on building cross-sector coalitions and partnerships to drive positive change.
Research & evidence-based solutions 🔬 - We advocate for climate policy rooted in state-of-the-art science, working closely with researchers at Oxford Net Zero and other academic institutions.
Honesty about our reality 🔭 - We're honest about the status quo: we are not meeting our climate goals, and the 1.5°C is slipping further out of reach. We remain hopeful and solutions-oriented.
Our Impact
Carbon Balance was co-founded by Ingrid Sundvor & Mirte Boot and is now expanding our team with significant opportunities for autonomy, creativity, and strategic direction. We work in close collaboration with academics across the world, including our core partners Oxford Net Zero and the University of Oxford, as well as with Imperial College, the University of Edinburgh, and Arizona State University.
In the UK, we've achieved significant policy successes and have key partners across the policy space. Our strategy focuses on three key objectives: educating on geological net zero, advocating for science-based fossil fuel regulation, and championing carbon storage obligations - all aimed at achieving our ultimate vision of reaching geological net zero and producer responsibility by regulating the fossil fuel industry.
