Food & Nutrition Data Scientist

Edacious is on a mission to build a new food system based on quality.  To that end, we are building technology to differentiate food quality from farm to fork with the goal of nourishing people and planet. Summary Edacious is seeking to build tools and technology for measuring, reporting, and communicating the nutritional quality of whole foods.  Recent research has shown high variability in the quality and quantity of macro- and micro-nutrients as well as bioactive compounds within whole foods.  To address this opportunity, Edacious is building a technology platform (hardware + software) to measure food nutritional composition (nutrient density) in production and supply chain conditions.  
What We’re Looking ForWe are looking for an experienced MSc or PhD that combines a background in food and nutrition with statistics and bioinformatics. Ideally you have researched, studied, or developed reporting frameworks for translating science (analytical chemistry) into simplified concepts and have a foundational understanding of nutrition and health. We are looking for someone with experience working with food composition databases, statistical analyses, data modeling, and potentially machine learning in the areas of food, nutrition, health, and wellness.

What the Job Involves

• Lead food composition research using analytical chemistry and statistical analysis to translate biochemical information into measurable and comparable frameworks for differentiating food quality.
• Research and build food composition databases for comparing food quality based on nutrient composition and density.
• Leverage existing research to develop a framework of optimal vitamin, mineral, bioactive, and macronutrient composition.
• Relate food composition to human health and nutrition as well as taste and sensory experiences; differentiate where research is well-established versus emergent for various nutritional compounds and their health implications.
• Lead efforts to create new tools for the visual representation of nutritional information in new and compelling ways.

You ideally have the following:

• PhD with 2+ years’ experience or MSc. with 5+ years’ experience; expertise in bioinformatics, computer science, analytical or biochemistry, food composition analysis, and human nutrition.
• Experimental design and statistical knowledge, with experience in building, managing, and analyzing large data sets.
• Effective communication skills, including ability to visualize and present technical information to a variety of audiences.
• Experience working with Mathematica and other software tools for statistical modeling, machine learning, and data visualization.
