Job Description

About VitroLabs: VitroLabs, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Milpitas California, is a biotech company developing a scalable tissue engineering platform for the efficient and environmentally friendly production of leather from only a few cells.  Combining advanced tissue engineering processes with proprietary advances to achieve commercial scale, VitroLabs is on a mission to produce cell cultivated leather that achieves the look, feel and performance of traditional leather without compromise. The composition of the material achieves the complexity of traditional hides without the need to go to animals as an ongoing source of hides. The process is more environmentally sustainable and favorable for animal welfare than that which is used to produce traditional leather.

About the role:

As Director, Cell Biology, you will build and direct several cell biology-focused programs including medium formulation development, cell line development, and cell biology analytics. You will build and oversee this multidisciplinary team and provide strategic guidance for each program to accomplish key goals, which will allow VitroLabs' to produce cost-effective, cell-cultivated leather. The Director, Cell Biology will report to the Head of R&D.

About you:

You have a background in and passion for strategic roadmap planning, employee development, and mammalian cell biology. You are as excited about the development of your team as you are about the development of media formulations, cell lines, and analytical methods. You embrace the startup environment and work with a sense of purpose, urgency, and positivity to support your direct reports and cross-functional team leaders. You lead by example and are not afraid to get hands-on with the processes and also learn from and lean on the technical expertise within your reporting teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic, technical program management for successful cell biology-focused programs including:
    • Culture medium formulation development
    • Cell line development to support cell culture scale up
    • Assay development and analytics
    • Others
  • Align research objectives with business priorities, key among them:
    • Develop cost-effective, animal-component free mammalian cell culture medium formulations
    • Develop validated, immortalized mammalian cell lines stably expressing recombinant proteins
    • Develop reproducible assays which query the biology of relevant cell-based systems
  • Guide a diverse technical team of folks who specialize in areas that may be outside your own areas of expertise; oversee recruitment, management, development, and retention of the team
  • Develop roadmaps for the team by actively listening to and collaborating with direct reports and cross-functional leaders to understand timelines, expectations, and constraints
  • Identify, evaluate, and partner with outside organizations and vendors to help facilitate your teams' complex research projects
  • Ensure that departmental decisions such as staffing, development, organization, and equipment acquisitions fit within our business roadmap, budget, and goals
  • Oversee and help determine departmental budget
  • Maintain knowledge of new technologies and trends in cell biology, media development, and other relevant R&D topics related to our industry

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Equivalent of 10+ years of experience* leading mammalian-cell-biology-focused programs

*At VitroLabs, we understand that those who are courageous enough to make the bold moves and run with the "crazy" ideas are the folks who drive innovation and enable us to accomplish our mission. There is no specific pathway that makes you a fit for this role, but rather your resilience, tenacity, and constant curiosity.

If you want to collaborate with us and know you can contribute to making a product that will change the planet for the better, we want to hear from you.

  • A background in cell culture medium formulation development, cell line development, and/or assay development
  • Understanding of scale-up considerations for cell-based processes
  • Experience with and passion for developing employees
  • Experience building and directing successful technical programs
  • Experience managing relationships with CROs and external vendors and working on complex projects with external companies, universities, or other technical groups
  • Experience working in startup environment or with resource constraints
