NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing.

 

NRDC is seeking an Equity & Justice Advocate to work with the Equity, Environment, and Justice team in our Washington, DC office.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking an Advocate to work with the new Environment, Equity and Justice Center.  The role will ensure that community strategies are intersectional and address the root causes of inequity. Reporting to the Director of Community Strategies, the Equity & Justice Advocate will be instrumental advancing solutions that center BIPOC communities through projects, coalitions, and partnerships.  The ideal candidate possesses a collaborate spirit and embraces new and innovative approaches to inclusive policy, research, and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Center, NRDC staff and partners to support projects, research, and community partnerships that advance community strategies
  • Provide research and data support for policies and issue areas to address intersectional issues faced by communities of color, seek to build social capital, and identify wealth building and investment strategies
  • Supporting co-creation of model projects and practices, for equitable and justice community strategies, testing innovative solutions in collaboration with partners, policymakers, and staff
  • Evaluate the effectiveness in addressing social and racial injustices of policies and practices across the fields of housing, energy, green infrastructure, adaptation, and urban development.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration, integration, and supporting a people-first approach across work streams
  • Engage with community partners, allied organization, and coalitions to build momentum for equitable policies at the local, state, and national levels.
  • Provide regular support for a range of center functions, including learning opportunities through a Community of Practice
  • Draft blogs, reports, fact sheets, and other written materials

Qualifications

Required

  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values.
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to work within a team across a diverse set of perspectives
  • Strong writing, analytical, and research abilities
  • Highly organized, resourceful, and ability to manage multiple tasks, projects, and ability to adapt.
  • Effective interpersonal skills
  • 1-3 years of experience in project management, analysis, or working in diverse coalitions
  • Knowledge and interest in one or more related fields – equity and justice, environment, community development, health equity, economic development, adaptation, public policy
  • Master’s degree in one of the above fields preferred
  • Experience working with diverse BIPOC-lead groups, preferred
  • Deep commitment to growing the equity, justice, diversity, and inclusion principles in NRDC’s Work

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $83,5000 to $100,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

 

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
