Policy Analyst
Carbon Direct’s mission is to enable organizations to reduce, remove, and utilize their emissions with carbon science. To inform our technical strategy and provide cutting-edge market insight , Carbon Direct is seeking a Policy Analyst to strengthen and standardize our expertise on end-to-end carbon management policy. The Policy Analyst will work with a team of leading scientists, carbon strategists, client managers, and other policy experts to analyze climate-related legislative and regulatory developments, track changes in global voluntary carbon market frameworks, conduct deep dives into their implications, and/or gain buy-in on organizational policy objectives and positions. Critically, the Policy Analyst will translate updates in federal regulatory, incentive, and other public policy rulings and voluntary carbon market frameworks into client-actionable insights and will be responsible for developing and delivering robust policy analysis for a wide range of clients. The Policy Analyst will be responsible for working across teams to exceed client expectations, provide exceptional thought leadership within Carbon Direct, and advance the global conversation on carbon management policy.  

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly analyze and determine the implications of complex international, federal, and state policy actions that directly or indirectly pertain to carbon removal and management
  • Turn details to decisions, reading complicated legislative text and translating it to coherent and insightful materials for client briefings
  • Conduct robust quantitative financial analysis on the impact of climate policies on specific technical projects and initiatives
  • Support clients with the establishment and implementation of internal carbon taxes, including assessing the accounting and financial impacts
  • Analyze developments in the global voluntary carbon credit market and associated market guidance frameworks
  • Craft client deliverables, including policy analyses, presentations, and memos
  • Help scope client needs and prepare statements of work related to policy services 
  • Work in coalition with think tanks, NGOs, and private sector actors to advance policy objectives, including implementation of major policy directives and regulations  
  • Lead project management and ensure that key milestones are achieved, including content for global conferences and events 
  • Gain leadership and cross-team buy-in internally on policy positions and strategies 
  • Work with the Science team to ensure policy development is rooted in the best available science and scientific findings are translated for policy audiences 
  • Represent Carbon Direct externally as a spokesperson in events, media interviews, and other communications

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in climate-related fiscal and tax policy, particularly within the United States, including relevant provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act Ability to translate highly, complex technical legislative and regulatory policy into actionable guidance and financial analysis for clients
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience crafting high-impact blogs, long-form policy analyses, media statements, and executive-level presentations
  • Strong knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes, including understanding of effective engagement strategies across multiple levels of government
  • Experience analyzing carbon credits markets, regulations, and emerging trends Exceptional ability to translate policy findings and recommendations into business insights for senior leaders
  • Experience in problem solving client needs, creating proposals, and creating deliverables
  • Ability to contribute across multiple functions of the team (e.g., high-level communication, deck refinement, analysis)
  • Outstanding track record of success in past professional and academic endeavorsMasters degree in public policy, business administration, finance, public administration, or environmental policy; or JD with a background in climate tax policy.

Compensation: $90,000-$150,000*range covers multiple levels, as determined throughout the course of the interview process
