Position Summary

We seek a confident culture champion who will proactively identify, craft, and implement new strategies, tactics, and systems that give employees the tools they need to succeed, belong, and grow. The new Senior Director of People and Culture will initiate and drive key human capital programs, working alongside senior Activate leaders to provide strategic insight and recommendations for each of our teams. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the new Senior Director will also supervise an Operations Manager for Human Resources as well as consultants and vendors. As the most senior HR leader on our team, the Senior Director leads talent identification, performance management, coaching, employee relations, compliance, and compensation, and plays a lead role in strengthening a team culture that rewards and celebrates our talented professionals.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead all people and culture processes, from hiring to performance management and promotions to compensation

  • Partner with people managers across Activate to strengthen Activate’s talent strategy  

  • Share expertise and thought leadership in the areas of performance management, change management and employee engagement

  • Champion and accelerate a culture where all teammates feel engaged, supported, valued, and inspired.

  • Develop and implement tools to diagnose and enhance organizational effectiveness and employee satisfaction

  • Contribute to Activate’s organizational diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) strategy from the internal People & Culture perspective. Identify appropriate resources to support team awareness and education in this area, alongside equity-driven people practices

  • Lead and conduct employee onboarding and offboarding 

  • Ensure organizational compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations

  • Research and recommend best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance

The Ideal Candidate…

  • 7+ years of people and culture experience, nonprofit experience a plus

  • Strong employee relations experience, including the ability to make employees feel heard and supported 

  • Enthusiasm for our mission

  • Demonstrated commitment to DEIB

  • Entrepreneurial spirit, including the ability to embrace uncertainty and ambiguity 

  • Outstanding communication skills

  • Excellent judgment, empathy, flexibility, humility, and sense of humor

  • Systems-oriented builder with a passion for continuous improvement

This is a highly flexible, hybrid role. At this time some employees work regularly in our Berkeley, CA location and at our other locations based on business needs and personal preference. We offer a competitive salary starting at $160,000 and bonus structure, along with a generous benefits package that includes professional development, $2,000 in annual wellness funds, unlimited paid time off, healthcare premiums covered for employees and dependents at 90%, and the opportunity to join a retirement plan with a 3% match beginning after one year of employment.
