SmarterX's production services are based on Kubernetes and hosted in Google Cloud. We're accelerating our growth with enterprise customers by migrating all services to an API-first SaaS model, creating more customer value through tighter integration with customer and partner systems. This rapid expansion and integration with our customers’ mission-critical systems means we need a more scalable, secure, robust, maintainable and auditable cloud infrastructure.

This is where you come in. We seek a strong DevOps architect and leader to be responsible for setting, implementing, and executing all cloud infrastructure initiatives. This includes development process, change management, service deployment architecture, scaling, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and root cause analysis.  This is a technical, hands-on position, managing a small team as well as coordinating with InfoSec and Internal IT functions and reporting to our Chief Product and Technology Officer.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Act as the principal advocate and single point of contact (internal and external) for all production service operations
  • Define, document, and implement service architecture standards
  • Ensure service uptime and performance according to service level commitments
  • Implement monitoring and alerting, both at the application and service levels, to provide service insights to stakeholders throughout the company
  • Manage 24x7 on-call escalation and issue resolution
  • Collaborate with development to develop service changes and upgrades consistent with DevOps best practices
  • Work with InfoSec to implement security controls and processes
  • Responsible for service architecture roadmap, departmental budget (including production services) and service KPIs
  • Migrate legacy services to the target service architecture and retirement/reduction of manual or bespoke service components
  • Instill a professional service operations culture at the company, including focus on quality, continuous improvement, and service measurement
  • Present internally, as well as to customers or at industry associations and events

Deliverables

  • DevOps roadmap, departmental budget and objectives
  • Automation, measurement and reliability of our services
  • Manage development, QA, staging, and integration testing environments
  • Train and manage DevOps staff
  • Conduct regular Disaster Recovery exercises, penetration testing, InfoSec audits

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years DevOps experience on mission-critical SaaS services using public cloud infrastructure
  • Minimum 4 years management experience
  • DevOps certifications for Google Cloud (preferred) or Amazon Web Services
  • Strong experience in containers (Kubernetes) and service orchestration
  • Experience in Python, Ruby on Rails, Postgres, and Snowflake is desirable
  • Experience in database administration and optimization is desirable
  • Experience in security operations
  • Experience managing and integrating third-party service providers
  • Experience implementing, operating and enforcing change management policies
  • Experience in software development, systems administration is helpful but not required
  • Excellent presentation skills, and written/verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to lead and manage cross-functional teams
  • Experience with contract and vendor negotiations and management
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a primarily remote environment
  • Experience in regulatory compliance is helpful but not required
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a related field

  • Based in the continental U.S.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Occasional domestic travel required to company offices (Boulder, Colorado) or to customers and partners

Salary: from $180,000 or higher based on experience
