Role Overview

You’ll be focused on our infrastructure automation, our security posture, and helping the rest of the team grow in their understanding of these critical parts of our system. You won’t be asked to develop new application features, but there will be many opportunities to create tooling in our application code to support security best practices. Our stack consists of infrastructure on GCP, a Postgres/PostGIS database, Pyramid and FastAPI Python APIs, and a React/MobX/TypeScript frontend.

About the Job

• You’ve just gotten off a call with our security auditors, and now you have a list of issues to remediate. You pick out what you’re going to need help from other teams on, gather those stakeholders, and discuss how we can get these issues fixed in a timely fashion.

• You notice that a service is a bit over-provisioned to handle occasional spikes in load. You could just go ahead and set up some autoscaling. Instead, you collaborate with an engineer who works on this service, and you both learn a ton from the experience!

• After talking to several engineers, you think we should adopt continuous deployment. You write up proposals for the new process and its technical implementation, and get buy-in on the process before you take a crack at the technical implementation. It’s all worth it when the “weekly release” event drops off of your calendar.

About You

• You are deeply familiar with using an IaC tool like Terraform to manage a cloud deployment in GCP, AWS, or Azure.

• Said cloud deployment had containerized services running in a variety of different environments - GKE, Docker running on a VM, Cloud Run, etc.

• You have been on-call before, and had to troubleshoot service downtime - we don’t have 24/7 paging yet, but might have to start.

• You have coordinated the adoption of new security practices across the entire engineering team.

• You have driven an infrastructure and security roadmap based on the input of engineers as well as external security auditors.

The base salary range for this full-time role is commensurate with experience + bonus + stock options  + benefits.

The ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position across all US locations; however, Populus has an office first philosophy and reserves the higher end of the range for employees that are based in the Bay Area and commuting to the office on a regular basis. Unless stated otherwise, Populus will prioritize hires who are able to work in the San Francisco office three days per week. 

Within this range, individual pay is determined by location, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education/training. Only in truly rare circumstances where a candidate has experience or expertise that far exceed the basic requirements for this position would Populus consider paying a base salary rate at the upper end of the range.
