Position Summary:  As a senior member of our R&D team, you will bring your subject matter expertise, experience scaling a chemical process technology from lab to pilot and beyond, and strong organizational influence and leadership ability to enhance our R&D team and be accountable for the identification, execution, analysis and decision making of our internal and external technology experimental campaigns and scale up pathway in your area of specialization.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Identify, win support for; then lead, oversee execution (including the design, fabrication, and operation) of targeted experimental campaigns to provide information required to design integrated process units for the conversion of natural gas into solid carbon and hydrogen.
  • Leverage your area of specialty to inform technical R&D decision making, including inputting into prioritization of lab campaigns, and identification of key experimental data outcomes to inform technology scale up
  • Work collaboratively with the engineering team on design and modeling of process units to ensure successful scale up of the technology to pilot, translating lab results and industry experience to viable pilot plant designs
  • Project manage external engineering firms to progress engineering designs in support of technology scale up
  • Develop CAD models and other detailed designs for components and process units
  • Lead the development and design of pilot equipment and systems including definition of operating parameters to enable the technology
  • Perform mechanical design, heat transfer, chemical process modeling, and techno-economic analysis using industry software tools
  • Manage / mentor junior engineers / technicians in the design, construction, and running of laboratory experiments to support the advancement and scale up of the technology
  • Designs and plans measurement and control systems for chemical plants based on data collected in laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations.
  • Determines most effective arrangement of unit operations exercising judgment to compromise between process requirements, economic evaluation, operator effectiveness, and physical and health hazards.
  • Directs activities of workers who operate and control lab or pilot facilities in order to run experimental campaigns in the progression of the technology

Education / Experience:

  • BS/MS with 13+ years industrial experience or PhD with 10+ years industrial experience, Chemical / Process Engineering, Materials Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years experience with performing mechanical design, heat transfer and chemical process modeling
  • 5+ years experience with performing techno-economic analysis
  • Previous experience and demonstrated results in engineering design delivery, successfully taking a technology from lab to pilot and commercial scales is critical
  • Experience with additive and advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to design, model, optimize, and construct components for industrial chemical engineering systems
  • Experience with CAD, chemical modeling, and advance computational software
  • Experience with additive and advanced manufacturing techniques
  • Proficiency and experience engaging with engineering, procurement, and construction firms
  • Understanding of digital and analog design involved in designs ranging from simple to complex functional modules
  • Experience in mentoring and directing Jr engineers and support their execution of engineering tasks and the advancement of their technical knowledge
  • Hands-on experience in all the stages of technology development life cycle from idea to lab validation to pilot
  • Excellent overview of the industry, able to leverage reference cases and best practices


Salary Range:

We are open to a wide range of experience levels for this position based on the directly relatable technical experience of the candidate.  

$135,000 - $195,000
