About the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES): Our mission is to secure a safe and stable climate by accelerating the transition to a thriving, just, and resilient low-carbon economy. We are widely recognized as an influential voice on climate issues, a trusted convener, and a credible source of expertise and analysis. C2ES is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization.

Our organizational values: We are ambitious and practical, advancing effective solutions that push the boundaries of the achievable. We are open-minded and inclusive, seeking out and considering a wide range of voices, views, and approaches. We are one team, working collaboratively, communicating openly, making ourselves accessible to each other, and treating one another with kindness and respect.

Requirements

Position Summary: The Low-Carbon Fuels and Transportation Fellow will serve as C2ES' expert on low-carbon fuel technologies and the policies necessary to bring down their cost, resulting in widespread adoption and emission reductions. This fellow also covers emission reduction activities broadly across the transportation sector. This non-supervisory, matrixed role will leverage broad climate and energy knowledge and will be supervised by the Director of Energy Analysis.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Research, analyze, and track state, federal, and international climate and energy policy issues, with a primary focus on low-carbon fuels (e.g., hydrogen, ammonia, renewable natural gas, sustainable aviation fuel, biofuel, power-to-X) for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sub-sectors of transportation and industry;
  • Distill and communicate relevant insights for policy (i.e., policymaking and policy explanation), identifying key questions for businesses, policymakers, and other senior decision-makers;
  • Monitor, review, summarize (i.e., update C2ES webpages), and comment on draft and final regulations (and other agency actions) related to low-carbon fuels and transportation, primarily at the federal level, but also keeping an eye on significant state and international activities;
  • Consistently deliver high-quality, well-written work products (e.g., quantitative analyses, policy briefs, talking points, comments, white papers, blogs) for internal purposes and for publications targeted to C2ES' audience of policymakers, media, and the general public;
  • Establish and maintain relationships with counterparts at companies and other NGOs and research institutions, as well as in government, including relevant congressional offices and federal agencies;
  • Work closely with C2ES's Business Environmental Leadership Council and other business and stakeholder representatives;
  • Organize workshops, briefings and other events engaging policymakers, experts, companies and other stakeholders;
  • Represent C2ES in other coalitions, in virtual and in-person convenings, and conferences;
  • Collaborate across the Center on research and policy analysis, communications, organizing events, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3 - 5 years' relevant work experience;
  • Bachelor's degree in science, chemistry, engineering, policy, politics, law, economics, finance, environmental law, energy resources, or related field.
  • Top-notch research and writing skills;
  • Knowledge or experience with low-carbon fuels policy, transportation policy, industrial policy, climate and energy policies at the state and federal levels, ideally including decarbonization challenges.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge and expertise of policies and actions (e.g., low-carbon fuel production pathways and use) related to industrial and transportation emissions reductions.
  • Able to present (e.g., oral and written) technical material to non-technical audiences;
  • Interdisciplinary understanding of climate/technology/energy issues (science, technology, economics, business, law and policy);
  • Familiarity with basic principles of qualitative and quantitative analysis;
  • Understanding of state and federal climate and energy policies as well as political and legislative processes;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize among and efficiently manage multiple assignments and meet critical deadlines;
  • Flexibility, willingness to pitch in at all levels, and a team player;
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently, as needed;
  • Commitment to, knowledge of, or experience in advancing issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental/climate justice.
