Everyone belongs at OVO

At OVO, we are on a mission to solve one of humanity's biggest challenges, the climate crisis. And we know it takes all of us to change the world. That's why we need diverse people from all gender identities, ethnicities, ages, sexual orientations, life experiences and backgrounds to join us.

Teamworking for the planet

Everything we do here spins around Plan Zero. So, naturally, the team you’ll be joining plays a gigantic role in making that happen. Here’s how:

OVO is a heavily data-driven organisation with an ever-growing demand for excellent quality, reliable and accurate data to power our business: our Senior Leadership team prioritising investment, our Product teams working out the best way to serve and delight our customers in a highly regulated and competitive market, our Data Science teams building insights to help customers reduce their carbon impact by analysing their smart meter data.

The Data Warehousing team is part of OVO’s Data Platform function. The team is responsible for building a cloud-first data warehouse collating all of OVO’s most important data together from across our data mesh, into a consistent data model, providing hundreds of analysts and data scientists across the business with the data they need to build dashboards, models and data products, that ultimately drive the way that OVO supports its customers on their net zero journey.

This role in a nutshell:

As the Product Manager for the Data Warehousing team you will:

  • Own the Vision: you will be responsible for owning the long term vision, and driving the quarterly roadmap for the data warehouse

  • Know your Customer: you will build strong relationships with business stakeholders, analysts, data scientists and engineers from across OVO teams to understand their perspectives of working with OVO’s data, and represent their voices into the rest of your team

  • Align, Prioritise and Measure: As per OVO’s Product and Tech culture, you will use OKRs and agile methodologies to break down work and ship value to the business via continuous delivery, actively measuring outcomes against goals, and iterating towards your product vision state

  • Support your Team: You will work alongside a dedicated and highly skilled team of engineers, supporting them with the right prioritisation, to deliver value from the warehouse in line with OVO’s data strategy

  • Collaborate and Share: You will work closely with other Product Managers in the Data Platform space and elsewhere, identifying opportunities to further enhance the overall platform offering to engineers, analysts and data scientists, and ensure alignment of programmes of work to minimise dependency and maximise pace

Your key outcomes will be:

  • Develop an excellent understanding of the needs of your various diverse stakeholders across OVO, and their use cases for analytical data

  • Define their problems and requirements, ideally finding common areas of pain/benefit to drive the greatest benefit for minimum effort

  • Break down and prioritise tasks by quantification of cost and effort against the benefit to the business

  • Work with stakeholders to ensure the priority calls you make are in line with strategic business direction

  • Support the engineering team using Agile methods to plan and deliver work

  • Champion your product in and outside of your team to ensure the greatest reach and impact across OVO

Systems: BigQuery, Jira

You’ll be a successful Data Product Manager at OVO if you…

  • A product manager with a passion for data and an analytical mindset
  • Love working with teams in areas like data engineering, analytics, machine learning or data science
  • Enjoy making sense of complex domains and sharing that understanding with others
  • Understand and embrace the highs and lows of teamwork in a fast-paced environment, with the ability to pivot to new priorities effectively
  • Feel at home collaborating with engineers and business leaders alike
  • Find joy in cutting through opinions with data and evidence
  • Know that building something great together takes resilience, perseverance, and a growth mindset
  • Recognise that everyone has their own strengths and seek ways to bring out the best in yourself and others
  • Know when it’s best to write something, say something, or show something to communicate your ideas
  • An ability to drive the delivery of cross-functional teams, ideally with Scrum, Kanban and other Agile methods
  • A focus on quality and accuracy when building data products
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts simply to business and technical stakeholders at all levels

And these would be a bonus!

  • Experience of using and building data products, perhaps as part of a Data Mesh implementation
  • Knowledge of DataHub or Monte Carlo, or similar products in the Modern Data Stack
  • Experience of cloud platforms. Google Cloud Platform would be ideal
  • Familiarity with BigQuery, Looker, Tableau, or similar tools
  • Conversant in data quality principles, its importance to the business and its complexity

You won’t like this role if you…

  • Don’t like talking to people. You will need to engage with users from across the business and a variety of roles and levels to ensure your product is having the greatest impact.

  • Don’t like change. OVO moves fast, and the Data Warehouse is a core component enabling us to keep track of how our business is performing, so there is a constant stream of new items to build at pace.
