Job Description

Position Description

Climable is a small, woman-run nonprofit based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We are committed to making climate science and clean energy understandable and actionable for everyone. Our end goals are energy democracy and climate resilience, and we aim to promote these concepts in all of our projects.

Climable is looking for a detail-oriented Finance & Operations Manager to join our tight-knit team. The Manager will help Climable to build structures and manage processes to create a sustainable and well-supported team. The ideal candidate will have experience with finance or accounting, strong organizational skills, and be excited to work in an organization focused on climate and environmental justice.

Due to the small size of the organization, members wear many hats, and you will too. Any candidate interested in joining our organization must be able to handle several tasks at once and be willing to collaborate and ask for guidance when needed. Priorities can shift quickly on a day-to-day basis. Flexibility is a necessary asset for all Climable staff. This is a hybrid role.

Roles and Responsibilities

Climable is a small team with four permanent staff members. We support interns through multiple programs, and typically hire 12-18 interns and co-ops per year. We also run fee-based consulting projects to help local communities and nonprofits access clean energy, typically through microgrids. This is a dynamic role that supports our important work. The Finance & Operations Manager is expected to work on a variety of tasks including accounting, bookkeeping, finance, fundraising, operations, and/or human resources. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the nonprofit space, energy, climate science, and community resilience.

Finance and Accounting:

  • Manage QuickBooks Online and accounting activities including bookkeeping, accounts receivable and payable, reports, and biweekly payroll
  • Assist with high level project management for all projects, primarily budget tracking, contracting, and project status updates
  • Manage our timekeeping system

Operations and HR:

  • Lead our hiring and recruiting processes for interns
  • Ensure all annual registrations and memberships are up-to-date, including SAM, Squarespace, Benevity, Supplier Diversity Office certifications, etc.
  • Administer staff benefits and our HR system
  • Implement and improve our onboarding and offboarding processes
  • Assist with review processes, feedback, and internal surveys
  • Support our file organization structure in Google Drive
  • Assist with policy development

Communications:

  • Collaborate with staff to write and edit grant applications
  • Update and assist with our website and online presence

Fundraising:

  • Assist with fundraising efforts as needed, especially our annual fundraiser
  • Submit donation acknowledgment letters and help us automate this process using our CRM (Salesforce Nonprofit)
  • Manage and update our donor management system
  • Coordinate venue scheduling and logistics for occasional in-person events

Qualifications

We recognize that women and People of Color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every qualification. Climable is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive work environment. If you are excited about this opportunity, but our desired qualifications do not align perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply! Applying gives you the opportunity to be considered.

Position Qualifications:

  • Problem solving: ability to tackle problems independently, using sound judgement, and recommend and implement solutions to improve processes
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated experience with accounting or QuickBooks Online (or similar bookkeeping software)
  • Some comfort with accounting terminology
  • Interest in, or experience with, human resources and fundraising
  • Strong interest in working in the climate and clean energy nonprofit space; passion for social justice and mission-driven work

Beneficial Qualifications (helpful but not required):

  • Grant writing experience and/or strong writing skills
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese
  • Lived experience of injustice and/or vulnerable community perspective

Compensation and Benefits

  • This is a hybrid position with about one (1) in-office day per week. Work typically takes place during normal business hours, with occasional evening and weekend events a few times per year.
  • The salary range is $50,000 – $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
  • This is a full-time or part-time position. We are open to working with the ideal candidate to find a schedule that works for both parties.
  • Climable observes all federal holidays. We are closed the last week of the year to encourage everyone to take a break. Additionally, staff are offered considerable flexibility and paid time off.
  • Although we are a small team, Climable is proud to offer healthcare, dental, and retirement plans for staff. We are currently and aggressively working to build out a competitive and equitable benefits and salary package.
  • Additional benefits include flexible schedule, flexible working location, and working with a great mission-driven team on impactful work in our community!

Other Considerations

Climable has a shared office space with another organization. Both of our organizations have a COVID-19 vaccination policy that was created to protect the wellbeing of our staff and their loved ones. The policy requires that all staff be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as per the CDC definition of Full Vaccination, which can fluctuate. Please consult the CDC website for the most up-to-date guidance on vaccinations. Should an exemption be requested, the team will take into consideration cases where there are medical circumstances and the requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and consistent with applicable law.

As we mentioned above, we recognize that women and People of Color are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every qualification. Climable is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive work environment. Please know that if you are excited about this opportunity, but our desired qualifications do not align perfectly with your experience, we still encourage you to apply!

To apply, please submit your resume and answer a few short questions at the link on our website.

Climable provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment and prohibits discrimination and harassment of disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state or local laws. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation, and training. Our culture values diverse representation and input from inside and outside the organization. We strive to involve and reflect the communities, groups, and individuals we seek to educate and empower.
