Job Description

About ev.energy

ev.energy is a Certified B CorpTM technology company on a mission to help energy and automotive companies rapidly accelerate transport electrification. Named “World’s Best Energy Start-up” and a “Rising Star” by S&P Global, we are a diverse and fully-remote team working on an industry-leading software platform that obtains real-time data from utilities to charge electric vehicles with the cheapest, greenest energy available while supporting the long-term stability and resilience of the power grid. We go to market with utilities and energy retailers across the world and administer managed EV charging programs for their customers, who are residential and commercial EV drivers, to help them earn incentives for low-carbon, grid-friendly charging.

The opportunity and role

ev.energy is a growth-stage startup with Series B funding and a clear goal: to intelligently integrate EVs into the power grid through a superior software platform for managed charging. In doing so, ev.energy and our partners drive positive impact on power grids, save ratepayers billions of dollars and help move our global economy and transport system toward a cleaner energy future. With APIs that cover 95% of the light-duty EV market, we’re building on significant traction in all 50 states and with dozens of major regulated utilities, expanding our reach and impact.

To achieve our goals, we are hiring a Policy Director to support ev.energy’s engagement with Public Utilities Commissions, regulators, policy-makers, and other key stakeholders across the US. This leadership role will have significant responsibility, autonomy, and potential for future growth within the company.

Working closely with the Head of North America, you will:

  • Collaborate with other commercial colleagues across the business to develop a US regulatory strategy that supports ev.energy’s long-term commercial and growth ambitions;
  • Lead ev.energy’s engagement at PUCs and other relevant regulatory bodies, and publicly represent the company to Commissioners, utilities and third parties in open meetings and workshops discussing EV charging and/or demand-side management;
  • Determine which proceedings and rulemakings for ev.energy to participate in that will expand the market for ev.energy’s managed charging services, including dockets for transport electrification and demand-side management;
  • Draft and submit compelling written comments and testimony on behalf of ev.energy;
  • Build high-value, credible relationships with regulators, utility regulatory teams, environmental groups, consumer advocates, and other key stakeholders;
  • Work closely with our Sales Directors to unlock business opportunities for utility prospects; and
  • Partner closely with our utility customers, like-minded companies, and advocates to advance our shared transportation electrification goals.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for an experienced policy professional with a proven record of market development in North America. You’ve crafted and implemented a utility regulatory strategy, from identifying key proceedings and personnel to seeing a positive policy enacted. You have an ability to filter out the important regulatory movement from the noise, and you can put complex policies into a business context. You have outstanding communication skills and communicate a point of view in a compelling and persuasive way both in written form and verbally. Your relationship building skills will further the policy objectives of ev.energy and the overall goal of electrifying transportation.

Required Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of policy and regulatory experience in the US within the energy/utility sectors;
  • Pre-existing understanding of the US energy landscape including state-level regulations and programs, federal legislation, and electricity markets;
  • Structured thinking delivered with a clear style of communication and relationship management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • A positive and collaborative working style, with the ability to consolidate different priorities and considerations into a single coherent strategy;
  • An ability to be flexible and entrepreneurial in what is a dynamic and fast-paced environment; and
  • Alignment to the vision, mission and values of ev.energy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Public Utility Commissions on EV charging and/or demand-side management topics;
  • Previous efforts engaging with utility regulators on the East and West Coasts;
  • Prior experience in a growth-stage startup;
  • Location, networks and/or ease of access to key East and West coast markets; and
  • Prior experience and success in working in a fully remote context.

How will we support you?

ev.energy is an inclusive company where diverse perspectives and experiences are essential to our success. We are driven to develop products that connect everyone to simpler, cheaper, greener EV charging. We work with the intention to build a company culture that engenders collaboration and supports our team members’ professional and personal aspirations. In addition to a best-in-class culture, the Policy Director will enjoy:

  • Competitive salary of $150,000 with generous share options vesting over four years
  • Fully-loaded benefits, including medical, dental, vision and life insurance and a 401(k) with 3% company match.
  • Supplemental monthly allowance to cover the lease of an electric vehicle (up to 10% of salary).
  • 24 days of paid leave per year, plus all US federal holidays
  • Fully remote role with the ability to be based anywhere in the US; we will provide co-working access or help you set up a working space in your home
  • Flights and accommodation for our twice-annual "team weeks" across the world, as well as any travel needed for conferences or meetings
  • A Macbook loaded with all the tools and software you need to work effectively
  • Funded access to conferences and professional development opportunities, along with mentorship and a chance to work directly with executives and industry leaders
  • Twice-yearly career review cycles to fast-track promotions and career growth within ev.energy
