WattCarbon is hiring a Head of Science.

About this role

WattCarbon is adding a Head of Science to its leadership team. We are building the first market for scaling the energy transition and you will be instrumental in defining the core measurement and verification protocols that we follow to enable this market. We envision this role to encompass a mix of internal and external responsibilities, but your primary responsibilities will be to manage M&V operations within our company and to exercise thought leadership throughout the industry.

About WattCarbon

WattCarbon has launched the first energy transition market for achieving climate goals through building decarbonization. We help organizations take meaningful climate action by funding building decarbonization deployment. Our platform integrates real-time grid carbon intensity data with energy data from buildings, devices, and production units to quantify carbon savings. We help organizations take meaningful climate action by aggregating demand-side energy resources into impact portfolios. Our vision is to become the foundational marketplace that drives the $10 trillion in capital required for decarbonizing energy use in buildings in the United States.

The Company You Will Join

We are an early stage startup. You would be the first person in your role and the eighth full-time team member. We are open to any applicant who lives in the US - you should be comfortable working in a fully distributed, remote-first company. Our team lives in three different cities (and one RV). We prioritize personal growth and professional satisfaction and encourage applications from individuals who want to have an outsized impact on a consequential problem. As we are a small company, there is significant room for leadership opportunities as we grow.

The Team You Will Join

You will report to the CEO and work closely with and be supported by the rest of the leadership team.

What You’ll Do

Internal:

  • You will be primarily responsible for managing and developing the measurement, reporting, and verification protocols governing the creation of Energy Attribute Certificates by the WattCarbon platform.
  • You will work closely with the engineering team to test, validate, and implement M&V protocols within the WattCarbon platform.
  • You will work closely with the rest of the management team to develop strategic priorities regarding the advancement of measurement and verification protocols and coordinate with our go-to-market strategy.

External:

  • You will lead WattCarbon’s open source initiatives and take on primary responsibility for engaging with existing and additional working groups to define M&V protocols for demand-side carbon savings accounting.
  • You will develop and publish technical, yet accessible, descriptions of WattCarbon’s M&V methodologies on WattCarbon’s blog and in other outlets as needed.
  • You will present WattCarbon’s M&V methodologies to professional audiences in webinars, at conferences, and in other forums as needed.
  • You will meet individually with stakeholders on an as needed basis to explain WattCarbon’s M&V methodologies.
  • You will advocate for open source, transparent measurement and verification of carbon emissions and energy savings.
  • You will stay abreast of advancements in measurement and verification in the scientific community and evaluate opportunities to improve WattCarbon’s current approach.
  • You will track, and where appropriate, engage with policy making at the local, state, and federal level.
  • You will interface with standards organizations (e.g., WRI, EnergyTag, SBTi) to ensure that WattCarbon is in compliance with relevant standards.

Experience:

  • 10+ years of related experience in the industry,
  • Deep understanding of principles of measurement and verification of energy savings,
  • Strong familiarity with carbon accounting methodologies,
  • Strong familiarity with the various policy arenas in which governments influence decarbonization,
  • Good understanding of EAC/REC market and efforts to create time-based certificates,
  • Good understanding of U.S. power markets, especially with respect to the procurement of 24/7 carbon-free energy,
  • Familiarity with energy modeling, forecasting, and load disaggregation.

Company Culture

Our company values trust, communication, and consistency

We start with a belief in each other and in the reason for our work. We generally subscribe to the idea that Marx was correct about the alienation of labor and we organize ourselves purposefully to provide flexibility around family commitments, ensure opportunities for substantive input into business decisions, and prioritize personal growth. In our day-to-day work, we operate with a high degree of trust for each other and over communicate when the path forward seems unclear. We hold weekly planning meetings, company-wide meetings on Fridays, cross-team 1:1s, and ad-hoc meetings in between to keep ourselves on the same page.

We take our time when we do work, as we want to provide ourselves with learning opportunities and room to improve processes as we develop new areas of the company. We are committed to treating mistakes as learning events and assuming best intentions. We prefer to spend our energy improving collective processes rather than seeking blame.

We share our successes, stresses, and mistakes as a team and celebrate individual contributions. Each week before the company-wide meeting, we write individual agenda items, progress updates, and cheers to give everyone space to discuss what they feel is important.

Our company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is represented by its remote-first principles, through intentionality in recruitment, hiring, and retention efforts, through company benefits and pay practices, and through an expectation that we will treat every individual with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Salary and Benefits

We operate with full salary transparency. We have targeted a salary for this role of $150,000 plus company equity. We have a full benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage and comprehensive PTO. A 401k is available for employee contributions at no cost.

Next Steps

To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter to recruiting@wattcarbon.com. We’re a small company, so we really value what you have to say. Tell us about yourself, how this role fits into your career arc, and answer the following question: Given all of the different ways that you might be able to impact climate change, why are you interested in working for our company specifically?
