Job Description

We are looking for an experienced entrepreneur scientist to build, establish and lead a scientific team in our new R&D site in Singapore, developing an innovative gene editing technology platform.


Job Purpose

The focus of this role is to build the laboratory and grow the technical team, whilst being the R&D and managerial bridge between HQ (Norwich, UK) and the newly established Singapore site. The Scientific Site Director will nourish innovation across the site, encompassing a variety of research areas, including: genome biology and editing, RNA biology, synthetic biology, microbiology, host-pathogen interactions, computational biology, and plant transformation.

Reporting to The CSO, Norwich, UK, the Scientific Site Director will contribute to projects at all phases of the pipeline, from initial design to field trials. The postholder will feel comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic environment and be able to communicate complex scientific principles, methods, analyses and results to professionals from diverse backgrounds, including internal and external stakeholders.


Responsibilities

  • Recruit, lead and develop a local team of R&D professionals to achieve the company’s goals.
  • Monitor and provide scientific input to ongoing projects to ensure high quality and timely delivery of R&D objectives.
  • Defining and planning scientific programs across teams to enable Tropic’s medium and long-term strategic goals.
  • Lead the daily operations of the site including budget oversight.
  • Accountable to the CSO for signing off rigorous and realistic scientific plans.
  • Support innovation capture and IP filings
  • Promote Tropic’s brand across the region.
  • Promote early-stage innovation proof-of-concepts.
  • Support the business team in new trait/technology evaluations.

 

Requirements

Essential

  • An interdisciplinary scientist, who understands most of Tropic’s capabilities, with strong entrepreneurial skills.
  • Managerial track-record in the industry
  • A leader with excellent communication skills, capable of influencing scientists and establishing networks with top-tier academics and senior professionals in other organizations.
  • Ability to both 'see the big picture' and 'dive into the details'.
  • Proven track record in designing and delivering high-quality research objectives.
  • Innovative and critical mindset.
  • Ability to build, manage and be accountable to a budget.

Desirable

  • PhD degree in genetics-related subject, preferably with 5 years industry experience.
  • Significant personal contribution to measurable research & development outcomes, including peer-reviewed papers, patents, awarded grants, technology/product development etc.
